The readers of HIGH TIMES want marijuana legalized, nationwide, and now. The 420 Campaign is a plan to bring legalization before the US Congress and the public. We want to use April 20th as a focal point every year to concentrate pressure on Congress to legalize marijuana until we get the job done.

Here are our top ten reasons marijuana should be legalized:

10. Prohibition has failed to control the use and domestic production of marijuana.
The government has tried to use criminal penalties to prevent marijuana use for over 75 years and yet: marijuana is now used by over 25 million people annually, cannabis is currently the largest cash crop in the United States, and marijuana is grown all over the planet. Claims that marijuana prohibition is a successful policy are ludicrous and unsupported by the facts, and the idea that marijuana will soon be eliminated from America and the rest of the world is a ridiculous fantasy.

9. Arrests for marijuana possession disproportionately affect blacks and Hispanics and reinforce the perception that law enforcement is biased and prejudiced against minorities.
African-Americans account for approximately 13% of the population of the United States and about 13.5% of annual marijuana users, however, blacks also account for 26% of all marijuana arrests. Recent studies have demonstrated that blacks and Hispanics account for the majority of marijuana possession arrests in New York City, primarily for smoking marijuana in public view. Law enforcement has failed to demonstrate that marijuana laws can be enforced fairly without regard to race; far too often minorities are arrested for marijuana use while white/non-Hispanic Americans face a much lower risk of arrest.

8. A regulated, legal market in marijuana would reduce marijuana sales and use among teenagers, as well as reduce their exposure to other drugs in the illegal market.
The illegality of marijuana makes it more valuable than if it were legal, providing opportunities for teenagers to make easy money selling it to their friends. If the excessive profits for marijuana sales were ended through legalization there would be less incentive for teens to sell it to one another. Teenage use of alcohol and tobacco remain serious public health problems even though those drugs are legal for adults, however, the availability of alcohol and tobacco is not made even more widespread by providing kids with economic incentives to sell either one to their friends and peers.

7. Legalized marijuana would reduce the flow of money from the American economy to international criminal gangs.
Marijuana's illegality makes foreign cultivation and smuggling to the United States extremely profitable, sending billions of dollars overseas in an underground economy while diverting funds from productive economic development.

6. Marijuana's legalization would simplify the development of hemp as a valuable and diverse agricultural crop in the United States, including its development as a new bio-fuel to reduce carbon emissions.
Canada and European countries have managed to support legal hemp cultivation without legalizing marijuana, but in the United States opposition to legal marijuana remains the biggest obstacle to development of industrial hemp as a valuable agricultural commodity. As US energy policy continues to embrace and promote the development of bio-fuels as an alternative to oil dependency and a way to reduce carbon emissions, it is all the more important to develop industrial hemp as a bio-fuel source – especially since use of hemp stalks as a fuel source will not increase demand and prices for food, such as corn. Legalization of marijuana will greatly simplify the regulatory burden on prospective hemp cultivation in the United States.

5. Prohibition is based on lies and disinformation.
Justification of marijuana's illegality increasingly requires distortions and selective uses of the scientific record, causing harm to the credibility of teachers, law enforcement officials, and scientists throughout the country. The dangers of marijuana use have been exaggerated for almost a century and the modern scientific record does not support the reefer madness predictions of the past and present. Many claims of marijuana's danger are based on old 20th century prejudices that originated in a time when science was uncertain how marijuana produced its characteristic effects. Since the cannabinoid receptor system was discovered in the late 1980s these hysterical concerns about marijuana's dangerousness have not been confirmed with modern research. Everyone agrees that marijuana, or any other drug use such as alcohol or tobacco use, is not for children. Nonetheless, adults have demonstrated over the last several decades that marijuana can be used moderately without harmful impacts to the individual or society.

4. Marijuana is not a lethal drug and is safer than alcohol.
It is established scientific fact that marijuana is not toxic to humans; marijuana overdoses are nearly impossible, and marijuana is not nearly as addictive as alcohol or tobacco. It is unfair and unjust to treat marijuana users more harshly under the law than the users of alcohol or tobacco.

3. Marijuana is too expensive for our justice system and should instead be taxed to support beneficial government programs.
Law enforcement has more important responsibilities than arresting 750,000 individuals a year for marijuana possession, especially given the additional justice costs of disposing of each of these cases. Marijuana arrests make justice more expensive and less efficient in the United States, wasting jail space, clogging up court systems, and diverting time of police, attorneys, judges, and corrections officials away from violent crime, the sexual abuse of children, and terrorism. Furthermore, taxation of marijuana can provide needed and generous funding of many important criminal justice and social programs.

2. Marijuana use has positive attributes, such as its medical value and use as a recreational drug with relatively mild side effects.
Many people use marijuana because they have made an informed decision that it is good for them, especially Americans suffering from a variety of serious ailments. Marijuana provides relief from pain, nausea, spasticity, and other symptoms for many individuals who have not been treated successfully with conventional medications. Many American adults prefer marijuana to the use of alcohol as a mild and moderate way to relax. Americans use marijuana because they choose to, and one of the reasons for that choice is their personal observation that the drug has a relatively low dependence liability and easy-to-manage side effects. Most marijuana users develop tolerance to many of marijuana's side effects, and those who do not, choose to stop using the drug. Marijuana use is the result of informed consent in which individuals have decided that the benefits of use outweigh the risks, especially since, for most Americans, the greatest risk of using marijuana is the relatively low risk of arrest.

1. Marijuana users are determined to stand up to the injustice of marijuana probation and accomplish legalization, no matter how long or what it takes to succeed.
Despite the threat of arrests and a variety of other punishments and sanctions marijuana users have persisted in their support for legalization for over a generation. They refuse to give up their long quest for justice because they believe in the fundamental values of American society. Prohibition has failed to silence marijuana users despite its best attempts over the last generation. The issue of marijuana's legalization is a persistent issue that, like marijuana, will simply not go away. Marijuana will be legalized because marijuana users will continue to fight for it until they succeed.

My February 8, 2007 column resulted in quite a few radio show invitations. During my appearance on Michael Baisden's show, several doctors called in to say the HPV vaccine was safe, it has been tested, and yes, they would get their daughters shot up. One mother who phoned into the show said her daughter has received the first of the three shot series and is now worried and doesn't know what to do. I could give her no advice because I'm not a physician, but she should be worried. On March 15, 2007, the bomb dropped on a cable network show which quickly made the Internet media; see full important column here. Diane M. Harper, a researcher who worked on this vaccine has revealed that it has NOT been tested on young girls and "worst case" scenario: increased cervical cancer rates. As I covered in my February 8th column, Merck needs cash badly. The lawsuits over another "safe" product of theirs, VIOXX, could bankrupt them and they know it; one verdict here. At between $320 - $400 per shot per girl in the U.S., then the world, you can see why Merck has spent millions buying the favors of members of the state legislatures. Now comes the truth from an individual who actually worked on this HPV vaccine and pray to God, enough parents get the truth in time. Stockholders of Merck need to bring down the boom on their CEO and others in that company for such irresponsible corporate shennanigans.

While many of us have been trying to warn parents about this vaccine, competing against the propaganda 'happy ads' for Guardasil targeted at young teen girls on the stupid tube, we have also been urging parents here in Texas to get in the face of the state legislature to over ride Gov. Rick Perry's "mandate" to vaccinate the young guinea pigs, er, girls, in this state. Informed legislators in our state house, most parents themselves, also got up in arms over this blatant move by Perry to bypass the process and fulfill his obligation to Merck for their fat campaign donations. The result: A couple of days ago the house side of our legislature voted to rescind Perry's Executive Order (118-23). Next comes the Texas Senate and I encourage everyone in this state to call your state senator and tell them to vote to rescind Perry's EO. The next question remains is will Gov. Perry do the right thing? Stay tuned.

In the meantime, watch out New Mexico. It appears your governor, Bill Richardson, has said he will sign a mandatory vaccine bill. Man those phones even if you have to do it at lunch time. Richardson's office number is: (505) 476-2200. Call your state rep and senator and let them know how you feel and tell them if they voted for SB 1174, they'll find themselves job hunting next election. Remember this: If your daughter gets those shots and ten years down the road develops cervical cancer, turns sterile or has a baby with defects, neither Richardson or your state legislator/senator can be sued. If Merck's still in business then, you might have an option.

In my previous column, I pointed out Gov. Perry's press release where he came clean by stating, "Finally, parents need to know that they have the final decision about whether or not their daughter is vaccinated. I am a strong believer in protecting parental rights, which is why this executive order allows them to opt out." But, how many parents got that memo? Listen to the "news" on ABC, CBS, NBC and cable networks when they cover this issue. Without exception, they all refer to Texas' plan as "mandatory." Trust "mainstream media"? Hardly. However, as one reader pointed out, opting out isn't so easy, which is why the deceitful Gov. Perry made it opt out v opt in:

Here are four reasons why "opting out" of sate mandated vaccines doesn't work for many families in Texas: 1,) "Opt-out" or Conscientious Exemption to Vaccination Process is a Bureaucratic Nightmare

To get the exemption form, parents must first submit a written form to State Health Department in Austin which forces the disclosure of the child's full name, birthdate, and mailing address. The Health Department takes those written requests and creates yet another form on which they print the child's same personal information that the parent had to send to health department, and the Health Department sometimes takes weeks to mail out these forms inevitably disrupting the child's school attendance. The Health Department only sends the forms by U.S. mail, and once the parent receives the forms, they must be notarized within 90 days of submitting them and then repeatedly resubmitted every 2 years even though there is no expiration set in statute.[1] Because the Health Department further eroded parental rights by publishing more rules getting rid of provisional enrollment for exemptions, (families used to have 30 days at the beginning of school to get their paperwork in), now schools participate in aggressive misleading education campaigns touting "no shots – no school" while not informing families of the exemption or the instructions how to obtain it.

2, Private Schools Deny Admission

The Texas attorney general issued an opinion in April of 2006, that states that private schools do not have to accept the conscience exemption to vaccination in Texas Law,[2] and many private schools do not. For example, the Dallas Diocese for Catholic Schools policy number 5024 states, "Schools will comply with immunization requirements established by the Texas Catholic Conference Education Department. Conscientious objections/waivers are not accepted in schools of the Diocese."[3] Every new vaccine mandate causes more children with valid legal exemptions to be denied their private school education.

3, Doctors Refuse Medical Care

Even though you may be able to get a piece of paper from the state health department affirming your right to refuse state mandated vaccines for your child, just try and find a doctor who will honor it! According to a recent study published in the Archives of Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine, 39% of pediatricians surveyed said they would throw kids out of practices who are not vaccinated.[4] PROVE has documented this rampant problem of doctors dismissing families utilizing a vaccine exemption in Texas to the legislature in previous sessions. Please review our report entitled "The Erosion of Public Trust & Informed Consent through Immunization Harassment, Discrimination and Coercion" prepared for the House Public Health Committee in 2005.[5]

4, Insurance Rates Rise and Accessibility Affected

Responsible parents who have secured health care coverage for their children will be forced to pay higher insurance rates whether they want the HPV vaccine or not. Even if you "opt-out" of the HPV vaccine mandate for Gardasil by Merck by securing a conscientious exemption waiver, there is no way for Texas parents to "opt-out" of the corresponding rise in their insurance premiums. § 1367.053. (a) (2) of the Insurance Code REQUIRES that any vaccine required be law must be covered by insurance.[6] This first-dollar coverage requirement results in corresponding direct hiking of insurance premiums to meet costs, and for a vaccine as expensive as this one, an HPV vaccine mandate risks putting premiums for basic health care coverage out of reach financially for even more Texas families. Additionally, we have received complaints from families where insurance companies are harassing parents with letters and discriminating on coverage based on whether or not the child has had all their state mandated vaccines.

Thank you, Dawn, for sending along the above information. I was aware of some of this nonsense, but not all of it as my daughter is 31 and thankfully, I didn't have to deal with this type of government tyranny when she was growing up. This is beyond an outrage. The parents of America should NOT have to endure this type of discrimination to protect the health of their children either by schools or doctors. The parents of this country should NOT have to go through these types of horse and pony shows because of corrupt politicians who claim "for the children!" Many will be too afraid not to get their daughter shot up because of the four areas detailed above. The ONLY way to send a loud, clear message to members of the state legislatures in all 50 states of the Union is for a massive backlash by parents. Tell them: get your hands off our children. We don't want a nanny state. You will NOT use my child as a guinea pig for the big pharma houses who enrich your pockets.

Toddler Contracts Rare Infection From Smallpox Vaccination

CHICAGO - A 2-year-old Indiana boy and his mother contracted a rare and life-threatening infection from his soldier father's smallpox vaccination, according to a published report.

The boy and his mother were being treated in a specially ventilated room at the University of Chicago's Comer Children's Hospital, the Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.

The family's name and home town were not released at their request.

The boy developed a virulent rash over 80 percent of his body earlier this month after coming in contact with his father, who had recently been vaccinated for smallpox before he was to be deployed overseas by the Army, the paper said.

Physicians stressed that the boy was not suffering from smallpox, but from the related vaccinia virus which is used to convey immunity to the much deadlier disease. They said the infection was a rare condition called eczema vaccinatum, which has not been reported since at least 1990, when the military ended a previous program of smallpox vaccination. Smallpox was declared eradicated in 1980.

The military began smallpox vaccinations again in 2002 because of bioterrorism fears.

Doctors said the child suffered from eczema, which is a known risk factor for vaccinia infection. People with eczema are warned not to have close physical contact with the recently vaccinated because the condition allows the virus to enter the skin, they said.

The U.S. Defense Department and federal, state and local health authorities have been in daily contact with the hospital about the case. Health officials say there is no infection risk for the general population because the vaccinia virus can be spread only through close physical contact.

Nonetheless, Dr. Madelyn Kahana, the hospital's chief of pediatric intensive care, said staff members treating the boy and his mother were required to wear face masks and gloves, and that the two had been placed in a special room with negative air pressure, so all air would blow inward.

Kahana said the boy had been treated with a potent antiviral drug, as well as with an anti-vaccinia agent supplied by the CDC and the experimental drug ST-246, which was untried as a therapy in humans.

She said the boy appeared to be improving this week, but will probably lose 20 percent of his outer skin layer.

I stayed up all night last night watching tornado warnings from northern Missouri all the way into northern Arkansas and the frenzie did not stop until the morning hours. Flint reported hail in Gainesville as one tornadic storm rushed over our area. I was at a neigbors at 6:00 am. until 6:30. Around 6:33 tragedy struck.

Report:
Parts of several Midwestern states and regions as far south as the Gulf Coast to the Florida panhandle were under tornado watches or warnings. In the town of Caulfield in south-central Missouri, a tornado killed a 7 year old girl in a mobile home and damaged six other homes and two gasoline stations, officials reported.

Damaging hailstorms struck several states.

The little girl's parents were air lifted to nearby hospitals along with other residents that sustained more minor injuries. According to Howell County Sheriff's office the tornado touched down in Caufield around 6:33 am and skipped across a 20 mile stretch of the county.

Snow piling up at a rate of 2 inches an hour closed Interstate 80, a major transcontinental highway, in southeast Nebraska from Omaha westward, where more than 9 inches of snow had fallen in some areas.

More than 50 counties were under blizzard warnings in neighboring western Iowa. Interstate 29 was closed in Iowa from near Omaha north to Sioux City at the South Dakota line.

Schools were closed across southern Minnesota as snow began piling up.

Support your local sheriff, but only if they support the U.S. Constitution and your rights.
The sheriff of your county is the highest elected official and has more power than most people realize. Your local sheriff has the power to tell federal agencies that they will not come into his/her county and attempt to enforce unconstitutional "laws." Your local sheriff is there to protect your rights, not the actions of an out of control government whether it is state or federal.

The sheriff is the only law enforcement official with the authority to summon the power of the county.
"The sheriff represents the power of the people; he does not represent the power of the state." When it comes to keeping the peace no one's authority exceeds that of the sheriff.
U.S. Constitution, Article 1, Section 8, clearly defines the geographic territories where the federal government has jurisdiction. The United States Constitution (Article 1 Section 8) grants 4 law enforcement categories to the federal government: felonies committed on the high seas, counterfeiting, postal issues and treason. Protecting our nation's borders would also be an appropriate constitutional federal obligation. But many of these federal agencies have become powers unto themselves.
Many of these federal agencies have lost sight of their true missions and have forgotten for whom they work and who they are suppose to serve and protect. Now we are coming to the point of being forced to turn to our Sheriffs and local authorities to protect and serve us from federal "protectors".
Amendment X states that the powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.
Feds have very limited powers in any state unless the local High Sheriff allows them to exercise power beyond that which the Constitution provides.

Sheriffs must NOT cooperate with federal agents in unconstitutional acts.
Sheriffs must stop, in their county, federal agents who attempt to commit unconstitutional acts.
I encourage everyone to contact their local sheriff’s department and see if your sheriff is truly protecting the well being of its citizens against overreaching powers of the federal government. This is brutal."This e-mail and other documents obtained by the Austin American-Statesman under Texas open records laws reveal new details about how Texas became the first state to require the vaccine that helps prevent cervical cancer. They show that the governor's office had been talking about HPV with drug maker Merck for at least five months and that the same state agency that the governor directed to implement the executive order actually drafted the order. And they show that, as Davidson's experience illustrates, the governor's office had simply failed to predict the firestorm.Critics have blasted the executive order, with some saying Perryoverstepped his authority and others worrying about the vaccine itself: that it's too new to know about long-term effects or that getting vaccinated against the sexually transmitted virus could encourage young girls to be promiscuous.A House health panel led by state Rep. The e-mail included projected costs of providing the HPV vaccine to low-income Texans.In fact, the governor's office was talking with Merck representatives notlong after Gardasil was approved by the FDA in June, documents show.In an Aug. 17 e-mail to Dr. Charles Bell, deputy executive commissionerof the Health and Human Services Commission, gubernatorial adviser Heidi McConnell wrote: "There is a good chance that we are going to do something on the HPV vaccine, so (a colleague) and I met with Merck representatives earlier this week to get an update on the vaccine."Black said that conversations between the governor's office and Merck"shouldn't surprise anyone. They're the ones who had the vaccine," he said.When preparing to announce the executive order, Perry's staffersapparently worried about coming across as too Merck-friendly.On the day before the executive order was issued, in response to a draftof the news release, the governor's assistant director of budget, planning and policy wrote: "(T)hat first line sounds almost like a Merck commercial."The draft was not provided to the Statesman. The governor's office hasasked the attorney general's office for an opinion on whether it may keep HPV-related draft documents confidential, said Chelsea Thornton, the governor's assistant general counsel.While the governor's office was worrying about the wording of theannouncement, key lawmakers were out of the loop. State Sen. Jane Nelson, R-Lewisville, chairwoman of the Senate Health and Human Services Committee, told reporters Feb. 5 that she was surprised Perry hadn't contacted her about the mandate. She called on him to rescind it, saying, "I just don't think he thought this one through."The same day, Brandon LeBlanc, the governor's community affairs publicliaison, wrote an e-mail to colleagues with the subject "Why the rush?" He asked for an answer to "why we didn't let HPV vaccine run its course in the Leg.? Preferably one I can use in public."Even some members of the governor's staff were blindsided by theexecutive order.Ken Armbrister, a retired state senator who is the governor's new liaisonto lawmakers, was inadvertently left off the list of officials who were to be notified ahead of time. Because Armbrister was unaware, he was unable to alert key lawmakers to what was coming.Perry's support of mandating the vaccine surfaced during thegubernatorial race, though few took notice.In September, after Democrat Chris Bell had said he favored mandating thevaccine, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Perry spokesman Ted Royer said: "Perry supports requiring the cervical cancer vaccine, as long as parents retain the right to opt their children out."At the time, perhaps because Bell and Perry agreed, "no one batted aneye," Black said.After Election Day, when Perry switched from campaigning to preparing forthe 2007 legislative session, he began to consider how to implement the mandate, Black said.State health officials could have added the vaccine to the required listwithout the drama of an executive order.But "after spending a lot of time thinking about it, talking to folks, not the least of which was Mrs. Perry, who feels very strongly about this issue, I think the governor felt so strongly that it was the absolute right thing to do to protect life, that when we had an opportunity like this to prevent a cancer in young women, that he needed to put the weight of the entire executive branch behind it," Black said.The executive order directs the Health and Human Services Commission toadopt rules that mandate the vaccination against HPV for girls before starting sixth grade.But documents show that state health officials were the ones writing adraft of the executive order that directs their own agency to write the rules.On Jan. 18, Dr. Charles Bell of the commission wrote an e-mail to agubernatorial adviser:"(A)ttached is the draft Executive Order that was requested by theGovernor's Office staff. I hope the draft is satisfactory to edit and create the official document."Commission spokeswoman Stephanie Goodman said it's not surprising thatthe agency drafted the order because "we know the language necessary to implement the vision laid out by the governor's office."The order says that beginning in September 2008, sixth-grade girls mustbe vaccinated against the four strains of HPV that cause 70 percent of cervical cancers. The shots cost $360 for the three-dose series, and it will cost $71.7 million a year to pay for the shots for low-income Texans, Perry spokeswoman Krista Moody said. Parents may opt not to have their daughters vaccinated.Three weeks after Perry issued the order, he is standing by it despitewidespread opposition from lawmakers and the social conservatives who have traditionally backed him. The Pap test looks for cell changes caused by HPV, so the cervix can be treated before the cells turn into cancer. The FDA also states the Pap test can also find cancer in its early stages so it can be treated before it becomes too serious, and reaches the conclusion that it is rare to die from cervical cancer if the disease is caught early.(3) On June 8, 2006, the FDA approved Gardasil, the first vaccinedeveloped to prevent cervical cancer, precancerous genital lesions, and genital warts due to human papillomavirus (HPV) types 6, 11, 16, and 18. Gardasil is a recombinant vaccine, it does not contain a live virus, and it is given as three injections over a six-month period. The vaccine is approved for use in females 9-26 years of age. However, the FDA also states that since the vaccine is new, more studies need to be done to determine how long women will be protected from HPV. For example, the FDA does not know if a booster is needed after a couple of years to ensure continuity of protection.(4) As detailed by the FDA, four studies were conducted in 21,000 women,one in the United States and three multinational, to show how well Gardasil worked in women between the ages of 16 and 26. The study period was not long enough for cervical cancer to develop; however, preventing cervical precancerous lesions is believed highly likely to result in the prevention of cervical cancer.5) In January 2007 the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices(ACIP), under the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, issued changes to the previous childhood and adolescent immunization schedule. The ACIP recommends the new human papillomavirus vaccine (HPV) to be administered in a 3-dose schedule with the second and third doses administered 2 and 6 months after the first dose. Routine vaccination with HPV is recommended for females aged 11-12 years, the vaccination series can be started in females as young as age 9 years, and a catch up vaccination is recommended for females aged 13-26 years who have not been vaccinated previously or who have not completed the full vaccine series.(6) States historically have maintained the practice of applyingimmunization recommendations to their school admittance policies so as to protect schoolchildren from outbreaks of contagious disease. The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons states that there is no public health purpose for mandating HPV vaccine for schoolchildren. HPV is a sexually transmitted disease.(7) With at least 16 States entertaining legislation which takes theunprecedented step in requiring young girls to obtain a vaccine for a disease that is not spread by casual contact in order to attend school, many organizations and associations have come out against mandatory HPV vaccine programs.8) The Texas Medical Association has stated that although it stronglysupports the ability of physicians to provide the HPV vaccine, at this point, it does not support a State mandate.(9) The American College of Pediatricians and the Association of AmericanPhysicians and Surgeons are opposed to any legislation which would require HPV vaccination for school attendance. They have stated that excluding children from school for refusal to be vaccinated for a disease spread only by intercourse is a serious, precedent-setting action that trespasses on the right of parents to make medical decisions for their children as well as on the rights of the children to attend school.10) Federal funds should not be used to implement a mandatory vaccineprogram for a disease that does not threaten the public health of schoolchildren in the course of casual, daily interaction between classmates and inserts the government into the lives of children, parents, and physicians.SEC. 3. Government's Drug War Fuels Meth Problem
Last month, President Bush declared Nov. 30 "National Methamphetamine Awareness Day."
The official statement from the White House implored, "I call upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate programs and activities."
There's no question that meth is a particularly nasty, vicious drug, both in how it's manufactured and in what it does to the people who use it. I think some skeptics have raised legitimate questions about the accuracy of some of the more hysterical media proclaiming we're in the midst of an "epidemic," but there's no question that the drug is widely available, and that it has some pretty terrible effects on users.
That said, the approaches the government is taking toward attacking meth don't make much sense.
As is often the case with policies aimed at curbing the drug supply, civil liberties were one of the first casualties of the meth hysteria. Several cities and states, for example, quickly made it illegal for businesses to sell customers combinations of ingredients that together, are used to make meth, but that are perfectly legal if bought separately.
Sell bhutane, cold medicine, and matches to the same customer, and an unknowing store clerk could well be arrested. These laws effectively deputized private business to begin policing the shopping habits of their customers – never a good idea.
The idea has led to some horrific outcomes.
In Northwest Georgia, for example, a meth sting ended with the arrest of 49 convenience store clerks for violating the odd new law. The problem is that 47 of the clerks were of Indian decent, and spoke only broken English. When undercover police officers tossed out drug lingo like "cooking up a hit," the clerks had no idea what they were talking about.
More troubling, 23 of the 24 stores targeted were owned by Indians, despite the fact that 75 percent of the convenience stores in the area are owned by whites.
Then there's cold medicine. When law enforcement officials began reporting that meth producers were extracting pseudoephedrine from over-the-counter medication to make methamphetamine, lawmakers in meth-plagued states like Oklahoma and Oregon rushed to make cold medicine more difficult to purchase – putting it behind the counter, requiring consumers to show ID and sign a registry to get it.
Critics like me complained that the laws wouldn't solve the meth problem, they would only invite new suppliers into thse communities – all while inconveniencing consumers. These measures might dry up homemade labs – and admittedly, they did – but they would create a market for purer, more potent meth from Mexico, along with the attendant crime that comes with an international, black market drug trade.
Additionally, the measures hurt generic drug makers, who rely on shelf space next to the brand names as the central part of their marketing strategy.
Nevertheless, more states followed suit. And last year, Congress applied the policy to the entire country, tacking it on to the renewal of the PATRIOT Act.
Sure enough, we now see in early-adopting states like Oklahoma that meth is as prevalent and available as ever. In fact, it's more potent, which means it's creating more addicts. And as predicted, police are tracing the new stuff back to Mexico. So instead of some loser mixing up a personal supply of meth in his basement, the state's now flush with a more toxic for of the drug, pushed by international smugglers.
One not-often reported part of the cold medicine story involves the pharmaceutical company Pfizer. As the media seized on the meth hysteria, critics of the pharmaceutical industry began lambasting the companies for their complicity in the "epidemic." The charge was that out of greed, the companies were refusing to substitute pseudephedrine out of their cold medicines in favor of the substitute ingredient phenylephrine, which is useless in producing meth. (See this criticism from an anti-meth activist on the PBS series Frontline).
Pfizer eventually made the switch, and put out the phenylephrine medication Sudafed PE.
There's just one problem. Phenylephrine doesn't work, and most in the pharmaceutical industry know it. Thanks to the new law and pressure from Congress, millions of customers have been wasting their money on a cold medication that's no more effective than a placebo.
As you might expect, pharmaceutical industry critics have seized on this, too: Rep. Henry Waxman, for example, has asked the FDA to investigate Pfizer for marketing a useless medication. Not wanting to upset Bush administration drug warriors, the FDA has thus far refused.
But don't feel too bad for Pfizer. Given all the abuse the drug companies were taking for what was a blatant, unintended misuse of their product, you could almost forgive them for putting the new product on the shelves, even if they knew it was useless -- almost.
What's not forgivable is that according to the Wall Street Journal, once Pfizer's new product was ready to go, the company switched sides, and began to lobby in favor of laws to put pseudoephedrine cold medicine behind the counter. Because the company had a non-pseudoephedrine alternative, the new laws basically cleared the shelves of Pfizer's competitors.
So Americans' access to cold medicine has been restricted, we've embarked on questionable sting operations that likely ensnare innocent people, and the FDA is allowing a useless medication to be sold to U.S. consumers. And to what end? Meth is more available and more potent than it ever was.
Typical drug war folly. This is probably the place to point out that drug war itself is the bad government policy gave us the crude form of methampehtamine that's so popular today in the first place. Think back to alcohol prohibition -- alcohol was manufactured, shipped, and stored on the black market, just as illicit drugs are today. Consequently, much of the booze that was available was concentrated, potent, and often toxic.
Deaths and hospitalizations from alcohol poisoning soared. Some who tried concoctions made with methanol literally drank themselves blind.
The similarities between so-called "bathtub gin" and modern meth are inescapable. When alcohol prohibition was repealed in 1932, the home brews dried up (not all of them, but the vast majority of them).
We don't swig basement-brewed booze anymore because it's vile and hazardous – we now have an enormous variety of safe-in-moderation liquors to chose from that are sold openly, and consequently are regulated by market forces. Were conventional amphetamines less strictly controlled, I think you'd see the same thing happen with cruder drugs like meth and crack cocaine.
President Bush wants us to take some time to make ourselves more aware of the meth problem. Fine. But I'd encourage Americans to look beyond what the White House or the Office of National Drug Control Policy tells you. The government's having a hard time solving the meth problem because the government helped create it.

Former Narcs Say Drug War is Futile
It's understandable why when many people first see Howard Wooldridge, they might at first think he's a crank.
The slender, mustachioed man of middle-age frequently wears a cowboy hat, and has been known to get around town on a horse. He also wears a black shirt with loud, conspicuous lettering on both the front and back. You'd be forgiven to dismiss him as a religious zealot proclaiming the coming apocalypse, or a disciple of Lyndon Larouche.
But look closer. The shirt reads: "COPS SAY LEGALIZE DRUGS: ASK ME WHY."
And people do.
"I get stopped just about everywhere," he says. "The shirt works. I have several different for different occasions – I can get my point across in 30 seconds in an elevator, a few minutes in a restaurant, or full-blown speech at a Rotary Club."
If he doesn't leave people convinced, he at least leaves them asking the right questions.
So does Norm Stamper, former police chief for the city of Seattle.
"People ask how a former cop could say drugs should be legalized, but it's precisely because I love police and love police work that I'm saying it. The drug war stops real cops from doing real police work. It's corrupting. It's wasteful. And it has wrecked communities."
Wooldridge and Stamper are featured speakers for Law Enforcement Against Prohibition (LEAP), a relatively new but powerfully motivated group of current and former police officers, judges, prosecutors, and politicians who have come out against America's failed war on drugs.
LEAP was founded in 2002 by Jack Cole, a 26-year veteran of the New Jersey State Police. Cole spent 12 of those years as an undercover narcotics detective. According to his bio, it was his post-retirement struggle with the "emotional residue" left over from his work as a narcotics officer that led him to the realization that the war on drugs has failed.
After forming LEAP, Cole, Wooldridge, and three other founding members hit the public speaking circuit, talking to government classes, Rotary Clubs, and campus organizations. They wrote op-eds for local newspapers, and they debated on radio programs. In just under five years, LEAP now claims more than 6,500 members.
Proponents of drug prohibition tend to dismiss reform groups like NORML or the Drug Policy Alliance as fringe ideologues (politicians seem fond of dismissing the latter group for no other reason than that it gets its funding from George Soros). But when decorated police officers, former police chiefs, and ex-judges and prosecutors speak up, audiences can't help but take notice.
These aren't stoners. They're former public servants, and many risked their lives for a cause they now say is mistaken.
That's powerful stuff. When a guy tells you he regrets what he's done for most of his career -- and what he could well have died for -- his words take on a unique credibility and urgency.
One common characteristic you'll find in many members of LEAP is guilt. Most of these former officers lug around a weighty burden. Many concede they realized early in their careers that the drug war was a failure, and would always be a failure. They regret now that they didn't speak up sooner.
Stamper says in LEAP's promotional video, "Even though I knew that the drug war was harmful financially and psychically and spiritually . . . I should have been saying much more of that, much more strenuously."
One thing LEAP's members can attest to that other drug war critics can't is the drug war's corrupting influence on police officers.
Tony Ryan, one of LEAP's newest member and a well-decorated, 36-year Denver police officer recently wrote in an op-ed, "the huge lure of money is always there, either through bribes by drug dealers, or during busts where piles of money are lying around. Corruption of law enforcement was at its highest during alcohol prohibition and we see it now with drug prohibition."
Any Lexis or Google News search will confirm Ryan's warning about corruption a dozen times over. That's not an indictment of police officers. Rather, it's an indictment of policy that puts police officers in situations where temptation and corruption come begging. But it's still a difficult argument for someone without law enforcement experience to make. Coming from a retired cop – in fact from dozens of them affiliated with LEAP – it becomes impossible for drug war proponents to ignore.
LEAP's message is powerful. I've now heard or seen four of its speakers' presentations. They use tales from the front lines to illustrate their broader points on public policy. Their delivery is authentic and gently persuasive, not didactic. They come from all political stripes, from hippy-ish liberals to live-and-let-live libertarians to law-and-order conservatives, the latter having come to the realization that the drug war consists of bad laws that cause much disorder.
For several years now, LEAP has been looking for a debate with the country's top drug policymakers – anyone from DEA Administrator Karen Tandy to Drug Czar John Walters to powerful prohibition politicians like Indiana Rep. Mark Souder.
So far, they've had little luck. That's too bad. If the drug war is still as important and necessary as our leaders in government say it is, it's champions should be able to defend it--especially against the law enforcement officers they've asked to fight it.

Ron Paul, the Real Republican?

When you read about a vote in Congress that goes something like 412-1, odds are pretty good that the sole "nay" came from Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas. He so consistently votes against widely popular bills, in fact, that the Washington Post recently gave him the moniker "Congressman 'No.'"
Paul isn't a reflexive contrarian--he doesn't oppose just to oppose. Rather, he has a core set of principles that guide him. They happen to be the same principles envisioned by the framers of the U.S. Constitution: limited government, federalism, free trade and commerce -- with a premium on peace.
When most members of Congress see a bill for the first time, they immediately judge the bill on its merits, or if you're more cynical, they determine what the political interests that support them will think of it, or how it might benefit their constituents.
For Paul, the vast majority of bills don't get that far. He first asks, "Does the Constitution authorize Congress to pass this law?" Most of the time, the answer to that question is "no." And so Paul votes accordingly.
This hasn't won him many friends in Congress, or, for that matter, his own party. It hasn't won him influential committee assignments or powerful chairmanships, either. Those are generally handed out to the party animals who vote as they're told. An incorruptible man of principle in a corrupt body almost utterly devoid of principle, Paul is often a caucus of one.
Paul recently announced his intentions to run for president in 2008. For the few of us who still care about limited government, individual rights, and a sensible foreign policy, Paul's candidacy is terrific news. Not because he's likely to win. He's a not-terribly-powerful Congressman who's a pariah in his own party – which also happens to be the minority party. Not the ideal presidential dossier.
Paul has already run for president once, on the Libertarian Party ticket. He returned to Congress as a Republican in 1996, even though the party machinery opposed him in the primary. He has since won re-election with progressively larger margins of victory, bucking the conventional wisdom about the political value of pork barrel spending and district patronage. Paul, for example, refuses to support federal farm subsidies, despite the fact that much of his district relies on agriculture. His constituents re-elect him anyway.
Paul's presence in the race is important because he'll put issues on the table that would otherwise be completely ignored. His presence in the primary debates alone will make them far more substantive and interesting than they've been in a generation. One example is the continuing disaster that is the drug war, which Paul rightly believes to be both immoral and unconstitutional. Paul also opposed the war in Iraq from its inception. Those two issues alone will differentiate him from every other candidate on the stage.
But Paul can then swing to the right of every other candidate on federal spending, regulation, the Nanny State, and the growth of government. On these issues, he can reliably and credibly serve as the party's conscience, and browbeat the sitting senators and congressmen running for president for their votes issues like the prescription drug benefit, the surge in federal spending, and the party's complicity in the corrupt earmarking process.
I don't agree with Paul on everything. His stance on monetary policy (he wants to return to the gold standard) is a bit out-there for my taste. He favors strict limits on legal immigration, and is far more alarmist about illegal immigration than I think is necessary.
Of course, the immigration issue will likely be a benefit, not a liability, to Paul in the primaries. He's also a registered OB/GYN who has delivered more than 4,000 babies – and is anti-abortion.
While Paul probably can't win the GOP nomination, there's a chance he can survive deep enough into the primaries to foster a national debate on issues like drug prohibition, as well as force the Republican Party to do some soul-searching, and perhaps reconnect with its limited government, Barry Goldwater roots.
Ideally, Paul's bona fides on immigration, abortion, federalism, constitutionalism, and limited government will win him credibility with and respect from primary voters, giving him leverage to take principled stands and spur discussion on issues like the drug war, privacy, foreign policy, and civil liberties. He could at least win enough votes and support to last well into the spring, forcing the other candidates to adopt parts of his agenda, and the press to cover his platform.
Under the less optimistic scenario, Republican Party leaders, primary opponents, and the punditocracy punish Paul for his principles, and demagogue his position on Iraq, the drug war, and federal meddling in our personal lives. Talk radio, conservative leaders, and the party machinery dismiss him as an unserious candidate, and primary voters take their cue. Under this scenario, Paul bows out early, the remaining candidates press on with business as usual, and the Republican Party continues down its unfortunate recent trajectory.
Which scenario plays out probably depends on how much primary voters actually care about the GOP's recent embrace of big government. That is, which is more important to core Republican voters: Limited government, or using big government to promote a conservative agenda?
Ronald Reagan once said that libertarianism is "the very heart and soul of conservatism" (Reagan was great at communicating the princples of limited government, if less great at actually implementing them). Of all the candidates so far declared, only Paul can credibly lay claim to the legacy of the Reagan-Goldwater revolution. How well he does, how long he lasts, and who ends up defeating him will reveal whether there's any limited government allegiance at all still stirring the Republican Party.

A Canadian company is poised to ramp up production of genetically engineered safflower to 1,000 acres in Washington State. The company has engineered the safflower plant—typically grown for the vegetable oil obtained from its seeds—to produce a drug to boost the immune systems of farmed shrimp.
Growing drug-producing food crops outdoors poses risks to public health and threatens the economic well-being of farmers because these crops are likely to contaminate our food supply.
Urge the U.S. Department of Agriculture to fulfill its responsibility for protecting our food by banning drug-producing safflower and other “pharma” food crops grown outdoors.

Letter from Mike Hagan......The letter Missouri press has refused to print

There is much talk these days at global, national and local levels about 'sustainability' and how we might all work together toward a more reasonable, healthy and green future.

I've attended a number of meetings and talked to a whole lot of people and, so far, I've not heard anyone mention the benefits of the reintroduction of industrial hemp into the regional and national economies.

I see ZERO reasons why this simple step could not have an immediate and positive impact on the national, state and local economies, as well as ALL of the concerns of sustainability/environmentally minded people.

Anyone not willing to discuss the reintroduction of industrial hemp into the US economy is not truly serious about these concerns. And anyone not willing to discuss it as a viable solution here in Missouri is smoking too much of its cousin.

How are we to take seriously those who ignore and reject a single most beneficial solution to a whole host of environmental and energy issues? Food, fuel, textiles, plastics, animal fodder, medicine, soil rejuvenation, etc. All from one plant that can be grown anywhere in this state without pesticides and without fertilizers. Hemp.

If people are serious about the severity of the 'crisis', only psychosis could explain such an obvious ignorance of solution.

Rejecting the realities of the hemp plant is no longer an excuse. Culture bound, provincial and hick-like attitudes are no longer a luxury. This is a BIGTIME corrective measure that can be implemented essentially overnight and it is something that EVERYONE who is sincere about sustainable community and a green future should be able to agree upon.

Congressman Ron Paul, a Republican from Texas, recently introduced a bill which would return industrial hemp its legal status and provide farmers the option to grow this remarkable plant. I urge my fellow citizens to contact your legislators in the house and senate to get this bill passed and I urge journalists to investigate the hemp story…the entire story…the history of it…everything…and start to report on it honestly.

How about it???

Is this state progressive enough to consider the wisdom of the world's oldest cultivated plant and one that could really, truly help us?

And if not, for god's sake, WHY???

It is unfortunate that the federal government has stood in the way of American farmers, including many who are struggling to make ends meet, competing in the global industrial hemp market. Indeed, the founders of our nation, some of whom grew hemp, would surely find that federal restrictions on farmers growing a safe and profitable crop on their own land are inconsistent with the constitutional guarantee of a limited, restrained federal government. Media: HPV Vaccine has little to no side effects such as….redness around the injection site, fever and headache.
FACT: The Washington Times reports additional concerns about negative side effects from the vaccine reported in 20 states. The article quotes :"The most frequent serious health events after GARDASIL shots are neurological symptoms," said NVIC Health Policy Analyst Vicky Debold, RN, Ph.D. "These young girls are experiencing severe headaches, dizziness, temporary loss of vision, slurred speech, fainting, involuntary contraction of limbs (seizures), muscle weakness, tingling and numbness in the hands and feet and joint pain. Some of the girls have lost consciousness during what appears to be seizures."

In an analysis of reports made to the federal Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (VAERS) since the CDC's July 2006 universal use recommendation for all young girls, NVIC found reports of loss of consciousness, seizures, joint pain and Guillain-Barre Syndrome.
The Gardasil vaccine has only been on the market since June 2006, and there are already 82 reports of serious adverse events filed with the FDA following the administration of this vaccine. ( As of date that number could be significantly higher )
FACT: Because the HPV vaccine was only studied for 3 1/2 years, the long-term effectiveness and safety of this vaccine has yet to be determined. It took years for thalidomide and Vioxx (also a Merck product) to demonstrate their most negative side effects.Merck also states "The duration of immunity following a complete schedule of immunization with GARDASIL has not been established."

CDC Finally Admits Autism is a Greater Danger to Your Children

A new Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report, considered the most complete assessment of autism to date, has found that the number of children who have an autism disorder is significantly higher than had been previously thought, and could be as high as one out of every 150 children.
Earlier estimates judged the incidence of autism disorders to be 1 in 166 children. But those estimates were based on smaller studies and used different study methods.
These findings may add further fuel to the growing debate over thimerosal, a mercury-based preservative that was used in infant vaccines up until six years ago, and is still used in flu shots.
For the new report, researchers used data from a multiyear, multistate study of 8-year-olds who were identified as having an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). ASD includes autism, PDD-NOS (pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified) and Asperger's disorder.
These disorders are characterized by problems with language and communication, often accompanied by repetitive or unusual behaviors, and generally begin before age 3, although they may not be diagnosed until later.

After this sobering report by the CDC, conventional medicine can't turn its collective backs on autism any more, as it has for a long, long time. The incidence of autism is even higher in some states than the national average; in New Jersey, more than one out of every 100 children suffers from an autism disorder.
Despite the evidence, however, CDC Director Julie Gerberding remains skeptical autism rates are really rising, citing "better studies" as a possible reason for the uptick -- although the results of each successive study are grimmer than the previous ones.
The most important number parents need to remember when it comes to vaccinating your children is 27.
Children were 27 times more likely to develop autism when given three vaccines containing thimerosal, the mercury-based vaccine preservative, and far less so when it was removed from them, according to studies posted here three years ago.
If you remain skeptical about the vaccine-autism link, I urge you to review a pair of interesting reports that go far toward explaining why the Amish haven't experienced autism like the rest of America.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -- Genentech's asthma drug Xolair should carry the strongest warning possible about the drug's risk of a serious reaction known as anaphylaxis, health regulators said Wednesday.
The Food and Drug Administration said anaphylaxis - a severe allergic reaction - could occur as late as 24 hours after patients take any amount of the drug, also known as omalizumab. The agency added that doctors and patients should be prepared to treat the reaction, which can cause breathing problems, fainting and hives.
In a statement, the South San Francisco, Calif.-based biotech said it was still discussing the request for a so-called black box warning with the FDA. "The updated wording and its placement in the label is not yet final," the company said.
Shares of Genentech were down 0.2 percent in midday trade on the New York Stock Exchange. Genentech is majority-owned by Swiss drugmaker Roche Holding AG (Charts).
Reports of the reaction to Xolair were seen in clinical trials before the drug was approved in 2003 to treat patients with allergy-related asthma, the FDA said. About one in a thousand patients experienced it.

In 2005, we reached a major milestone ... for the first time since the federal government outlawed hemp farming in the United States, a federal bill was introduced that would remove restrictions on the cultivation of non-psychoactive industrial hemp. At a Capitol Hill lunch on June 23, 2005 marking the introduction of H.R. 3037, the "Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2005," Congressional staffers were treated to a delicious gourmet hemp lunch while listening to various prominent speakers tout the myriad benefits of encouraging and supporting a domestic hemp industry.
The bill was written with the help of Vote Hemp by chief sponsor Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), and it garnered 11 additional co-sponsors. The bill defined industrial hemp and assigned authority over it to the states, allowing laws in those states regulating the growing and processing of industrial hemp to take effect.
On February 13, 2007 Rep. Ron Paul introduced H.R. 1009, the "Industrial Hemp Farming Act of 2007," with nine original co-sponsors: Representatives Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), Barney Frank (D-MA), Raúl Grijalva (D-AZ), Maurice Hinchey (D-NY), Dennis Kucinich (D-OH), Jim McDermott (D-WA), George Miller (D-CA), Pete Stark (D-CA), and Lynn Woolsey (D-CA).

Paid Media.....What happened to peoples letters?
Well things are getting really deep seeded. It has been two weeks now since I sent my letter on the war on drugs, guns and the truth to 5 MO. newspapers for them to put in their opinon section. As of today...NOTHING!!!!!
Letter was sent to KC Star, St. Louis Post Dispatch, Springfield News Leader, West Plains Daily Quill and The Ozark County Times. Cowards of the press not wanting to discuss this bogus war on drugs and the uses of cannabis that could save the economy, farmers, people and this planet. I earlier posted Mike Hagan's report of his radio broadcast where he also stated he had sent a letter to two local newspapers and after three weeks.....NOTHING!!!!!
Last night I addressed the KOLR channel 10 news station on the propaganda pieces they were running on the HPV vaccine....sent them all the facts. Still they continued to run their press release programing and did not report the truth in regards to this urgent matter.
Screw 'EM !!!!!
Starting today I'm running my own campaign to spread the truth on these issues....The Truth about Cannabis, Vaccines, Ron Paul Presidential Campaign and what ever may come down the pike. I encourage everyone out there to do the same. It's time to make some changes!!!
And all you people that like to talk on these subjects but keep silent in public it's time to step out of the closet.....we need your voices to be heard.
Burn copies of interviews, make flyers, write articles....let's get the truth out there. Hand this material out to everyone you see......and have your friends do the same.

New Robo-Weapon: Paralyzing Floodlight
Well, this ought to chill out anyone who was worried about a robotic uprising: our mechanical overlords may not kill us right away. At first, they just might zap us with a paralyzing burst of light.
The US Army's Aviation Applied Technology Directorate (AATD) plans to demonstrate the use of a 7.5 million candlepower strobe floodlight system mounted on board an unmanned air vehicle as a non-lethal crowd-control system," the always-linkworthy Flight International tells us.
The project will see a Peak Beam Systems searchlight adapted to operate as a strobe capable of inducing physical effects, such as short-term paralysis, in humans.
AATD plans to award contacts to the Edgemont, Pennsylvania-based Peak Systems for the modified searchlight in March, with demonstrations within 12 months.
US government acquisition records released on 9 February say the sole source contract calls for Peak Systems to "design and fabricate a light-based immobilisation system/deterrent device and integrate it with an unmanned aerial system. This will include any necessary medical research on frequency and amplitude modulation of high-intensity light that will cause immobilisation to all those within the beam."

Medical professionals in South Texas have identified another disease that has apparently slipped across the border – caused by a rare brain worm that can be fatal and is being spread by unsanitary food-handling practices.

The devastating extent to which watching television damages children's health is spelt out in a report today.
It lists 15 ways that over-exposure to TV can harm youngsters - from fuelling obesity and shortsightedness to causing premature puberty and autism.
Author Dr Aric Sigman, who reviewed 35 academic studies, said the findings implicated television in 'the greatest unacknowledged health scandal of our time'.
He accused Ministers of ignoring the link between TV and a host of adverse consequences in the young, including slower progress at school and poor health continuing into adulthood.
Limiting time spent in front of the Box must become a Government priority to improve children's well-being and save the Health Service millions, he said.
Dr Sigman claimed that, based on national viewing figures, the average child will have spent a full year watching television by the time they are six.
More than half of three-year-olds have TVs in their bedrooms.
Dr Sigman, an associate fellow of the British Psychological Society, said that children under three should not be watching any television at all and parents should only introduce it 'judiciously' after that.
He recommended that between the ages of three to five children should watch no more half an hour of 'good quality programming' a day.
This could be increased to an hour for five to 12-year-olds and an hour and a half for teenagers.
Days after a report revealed British children to be the unhappiest and unhealthiest in the developed world, Dr Sigman suggested it was no coincidence that Britons also watch the most TV in Europe.
'Watching television, irrespective of the content, is increasingly associated with unfavourable biological and cognitive changes,' he warned.
'These alterations occur at viewing levels far below the population norm.
'Nobody wants to know about it. The Government in all its white papers never mentions television. It's bizarre.
'To allow children to continue to watch this much screen media is an abdication of parental responsibility - truly hands-off parenting.'
According to Dr Sigman's report, published in the science journal Biologist, watching too much television has been linked with hormonal changes that disrupt sleep, promote obesity and even lower immunity to disease.
It is also said to hamper brain development since TV viewing, unlike reading, fails to provide growing brains with the stimulation needed to foster analytical thinking.
One long-term study in New Zealand, tracked children from birth and concluded that watching large amounts of TV in childhood was linked with poor educational achievement by the age of 26.
Youngsters also had shorter attention spans and were at greater risk of developing Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
The onset of puberty may even be hastened by too much television.
An Italian study found that children deprived of TV had far higher levels of the hormone melatonin, which is known to slow down the advance of sexual maturity.
These are the 15 harmful effects of TV on children: • Obesity. A result of little exercise. • Disrupted hormones. Light from televisions suppresses production of the key hormone melatonin. • Lowered immune system. Reduced melatonin may increase the chance of mutations in cell DNA, which causes cancer. • Premature puberty. Also linked to low levels of melatonin. • Sleep disorders. Over-stimulating the senses causes sleeplessness. • Autism. Linked to a lack of social interaction. • Increased body fat. Altered levels of the hormones leptin and ghrelin produce fat and boost appetite. • Poor concentration. Development of brain cells governing attention span is impaired. • Difficulty reading. A result of poor intellectual stimulation while young. • Type 2 diabetes - From eating high-calorie food while watching TV. • Changes to skin immune cells. Waves emitted by sets are linked to changes in skin 'mast' cells. • Increased cholesterol. A result of an inactive childhood. • Slower metabolism. Cryer, is no stranger to conflict and controversy. The Hall of Fame attorney, an honor graduate of LSU Law School and member of the prestigious Order of the Coif, has a reputation for taking on issues no one else would and, on a number of occasions, he has made new inroads in the legal world. But now he has thrown down the gauntlet in front of the mother of all 800 pound gorillas, the Internal Revenue Service, and the mama gorilla has picked it up. The only thing certain now is that someone is going to be hurt. The story began over a decade ago when a friend told Cryer that the income tax was a sham. Cryer did not believe a word of it and thought his friend had gone off the deep end. Learning that his friend had decided to stop filing tax returns, Cryer determined to research the matter, show his friend where he was wrong, and keep him from getting in trouble with the IRS. That is how a two-year research project began, but it did not turn out the way Cryer expected. Sporting a wry grin, Cryer said "That just goes to show you that no good deed goes unpunished." His research not only included the tax laws themselves, but went past the first income tax in 1861 to the drafting of the Constitution and included reading hundreds of cases, Congressional archives and tax laws from 1913 to present. Cryer learned that although his friend had only a piece of the picture, he was right. "The Tax Code and its regulations are carefully and," he adds, "ingeniously crafted to deceive," said Cryer. And, more importantly, he says, he knows why. So Cryer decided he would also stop filing returns and would challenge the IRS if and when it came to call. Cryer said "Once you've taken an oath to uphold the Constitution and the law, obeying the law is only half the job. You also have to be willing to fight for it. I've not only sworn to fight for the Constitution as an attorney, as a former officer in the Army I've sworn to die for it." In 2001 they came, demanding information and returns. Cryer advised them that if they could show him any law making him liable or making his revenues taxable he would file any tax returns required by the law. They could not show him any law. Instead, the IRS began to pelt Cryer with a series of summonses, gathering up all banking records. It even subpoenaed Cryer's secretary into the office for interrogation. But Cryer did not budge. Frustrated, the IRS called in their criminal investigations division, CID, and Cryer told them the same thing, "Show me the law that makes me liable or my revenue taxable and I will file." They could not show him any law. CID began the summons pelting all over again, but Cryer filed a petition to quash the summonses, which even included summonsing his college and law school records from almost forty years ago. "I suppose they thought the records would show I was some kind of kook or an idiot, but all they would have found is that I graduated from college in only three years and that I graduated from law school in the top of my class." Cryer said. So, CID called in the Justice Department (DOJ) and the sabers began to rattle. Cryer met with the Assistant U. S. Attorney and an official of the IRS and reminded them that all they need do is show him the law. They could not show him any law, either. "The CID and DOJ both responded only with 'your position is frivolous.' I had never stated a position, so how could they know whether it was frivolous?" Cryer said, "Imagine my sending you a bill for $1,000 and when you call me and ask what the bill was for I simply said, 'that position is frivolous, just write the check and send it in.' What would you say? Would you write the check?" "After that they circled for awhile, apparently not sure what to do with or to me," he continues, "but when I went public with a book I'm writing, LIBERTY LOST, A Treasure Map to Buried Freedom/, about how the federal government has escaped its constitutional limits and how to put it back, that broke the impasse. Within two months they accused me of tax evasion. Do I look like Al Capone? Well, I am a bit overweight and he was kind of chubby, too." The two count indictment accuses Cryer of concealing income in a trust in 2000 and 2001, keeping himself "below the radar." But in 2001 he was not only on the radar, he was in the cross-hairs. Cryer, whose wife, Carolyn, was severely disabled, was worried that if anything happened to him Carolyn's son would have her destitute before the grass grew over his grave. He set up the trust in 1993 and opened brokerage accounts in hopes of parlaying the seed money he could muster up into a fund to provide for her and safeguard the money. Carolyn died in 1999, but he continued to trade in the accounts. "They subpoenaed every record on me you could imagine, they even got into my dry cleaner's account, but they did not subpoena the brokerage account records. They did not want the facts, just an indictment. If they had they would have known that the trust not only had no income for those two years, it lost money both years, but they did not want to know the truth because that would prevent them from accusing me. " he said. Cryer says that it has already been an eye-opening experience for him, "It's been revealing. I've had agents tell me the law did not apply to them, so I suppose they think they are above the law. Another, challenged with having failed to follow IRS procedures explained that the procedures are binding on us (the peasants?), but that the IRS does not have to follow its own procedures unless it wants to. After effecting a legal stay on the CID summonses, a CID investigator called the banks he had summonsed and when they pointed out that they were stayed and not allowed to release records until the court ruled, he demanded they send him the records anyway, law or no law. After I made full disclosure of all records, saying show me where any of this is taxed, they sent agents out to 'visit' with my clients, and you can imagine what effect that has had on my practice. But the ride is going to get a lot bumpier from here on. I'm threatening a lot of rice bowls. Someone may actually have to go get a job and work like the rest of us." Well, now the worm has turned. Cryer filed a motion to dismiss both counts against him, showing that the law, as it is written, does not make him liable nor tax his revenue from his law practice. The motion takes another bold step, however, revealing that the income tax, as applied to wages, salaries and fees personally earned, is unconstitutional, citing four separate grounds for the unconstitutionality of the law as to almost every citizen's revenue personally earned. According to Cryer, the law, which is carefully drawn to stay inside the Constitution, does not actually tax personal earnings, but the IRS publications, no more law than Time Magazine, say it does and by collecting taxes on personal earnings it has violated several fundamental constitutional restrictions. He says that nearly a trillion dollars is siphoned, illegally, away from families and households every year, although their wages and salaries, including bonuses, are exempt from taxation under the Constitution. "I wish there were some way I could have taken this case on a 1/3 contingency," he joked. Due to the adverse publicity and clients' fear of being targeted if they get too close to a target, Cryer says his practice has suffered immensely, placing him in a severe financial strain. "Getting the government off everyone's back and out of their pockets is going to be expensive and, frankly, I don't have the means," Cryer said, "but somehow I am going to finish this. I am totally convinced that this is why I am here on this Earth, this is why I am a lawyer, and since it's meant to be, it will be." CALL TO ARMS! Over 70 citizens gathered at a Town Hall Meeting in Cameron Thursday evening to discuss the National Animal ID System, NAIS. Temperatures hovered around zero but that did not keep people from coming out to discuss this important issue. One couple drove over 6 hours to attend this meeting.The NAIS is an international program proposed by the USDA to ID all livestock animals in the USA and track their movements within 48 hours. The implementation is 3 phase. Step 1 is to identify all Premises in the USA that house as little as one livestock. Step 2 is to permanently mark all livestock (29 species) with an international ID number. Step 3 is to electronically report, monitor, and track all movements and events such as birth, death and slaughter to the USDA with in 24 hours. The Missouri Dept of Ag, MDA, is in Step one of the program.The NAIS has come under considerable criticism as small and medium size farmers consider it intrusive, expensive and unconstitutional.Of the attendees of the town hall meeting only one was in support of the program and more than 70 opposed.The state legislature has 3 bills introduced to stop the NAIS in Missouri. 5th district Representative Jim Guest, King City, spoke about the progress of these bills. House bill 747 is the preferred bill. It has wide support including co-sponsor, speaker of the house, Rod Jetton. However the bill has hit a road block with the House Ag committee chair, John Quinn, of Chillicothe. Rep Quinn is now wanting to change the bill to allow the Missouri Dept of Ag to participate in a voluntary version of the unpopular NAIS program.Many citizens expressed distrust for a voluntary program. The USDA has plans in place to quickly convert a voluntary animal ID program into a mandatory program. 3rd district State Rep Jim Whorton of Trenton stated that he believes the USDA is just waiting for another disease outbreak and then they will move quickly to convert the program to mandatory.Doreen Hannes said that the USDA definition of voluntary is 'the program is only voluntary if your animal is born on your farm, dies on your farm, and never leaves or co-mingles with other animals from off your farm" This eliminates 99% of all animal owners in the USA. Hannes also explained that while the USDA changed their position in November 2006 from a Mandatory National program, to a program that is Voluntary at the National level, that we should be wary of the USDA's intentions. Case in point the USDA gave over 14 million dollars to state depts of ag to implement mandatory programs just a few weeks after declaring a so called voluntary National program. Michigan and Wisconsin are currently implementing Mandatory NAIS programs. This brought concern from attendees "If I purchase an animal from Michigan that is already tagged, will I have to register my farm as a premise and track that tagged animal?" Campaigners against genetically modified crops in Britain last are calling for trials of GM potatoes this spring to be halted after releasing more evidence of links with cancers in laboratory rats.
UK Greenpeace activists said the findings, obtained from Russian trials after an eight-year court battle with the biotech industry, vindicated research by Dr Arpad Pusztai, whose work was criticised by the Royal Society and the Netherlands State Institute for Quality Control.
The disclosure last night of the Russian study on the GM Watch website led to calls for David Miliband, the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, to withdraw permission for new trials on GM potatoes to go ahead at secret sites in the UK this spring. Alan Simpson, a Labour MP and green campaigner, said: "These trials should be stopped. The research backs up the work of Arpad Pusztai and it shows that he was the victim of a smear campaign by the biotech industry. There has been a cover-up over these findings and the Government should not be a party to that."
Mr Simpson said the findings, which showed that lab rats developed tumours, were released by anti-GM campaigners in Wales. Dr Pusztai and a colleague used potatoes that had been genetically modified to produce a protein, lectin. They found cell damage in the rats' stomachs, and in parts of their intestines.
The research is likely to spark a fresh row about GM crops in Britain. Graham Thompson, a Greenpeace campaigner, said: "It is important because it backs up the research by Pusztai, which was smeared at the time by the industry."
Brian John of GM Free Cymru, who released the findings, said the research was conducted in 1998 by the Institute of Nutrition of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences and has been suppressed for eight years.
It showed that the potatoes did considerable damage to the rats' organs. Those in the "control groups" that were fed non-GM potatoes suffered ill-effects, but those fed GM potatoes suffered more serious organ and tissue damage.
The potatoes contained an antibiotic resistance marker gene. The institute that carried out the studies refused to release all the information. However, Greenpeace and other consumer groups mounted a protracted legal battle campaign to obtain the report. In May 2004 the Nikulinski District Court in Russia ruled that information relating to the safety of GM food should be open to the public.
The institute, however, refused to release the report. Greenpeace and Russian activist groups again took the institute to court, and won a ruling that the report must be released.
Irina Ermakova, a consultant for Greenpeace, said she had conducted her own animal feeding experiments with GM materials. "The GM potatoes were the most dangerous of the feeds used in the trials ... and on the basis of this evidence they cannot be used in the nourishment of people."
Greenpeace said the Russian trials were also badly flawed. Half of the rats in the trial died, and results were taken from those that survived, in breach of normal scientific practice.

The first major anti-gun bill of the new Congress has already been introduced, and it could prove to be the most serious threat to the Second Amendment we face under the new congressional leadership.
On the first full day of the new Congress, anti-gun Rep. Carolyn McCarthy introduced H.R. 297, the most massive expansion of the Brady law since it passed in 1993. This is a bill you helped kill last year, but the new House leadership will be even more eager to pass it than were their predecessors.
Covered under this bill are records pertaining to the Lautenberg misdemeanor gun ban, lists of persons under indictment, mental health records, records relevant to the identification of illegal aliens and other records.
Under the Lautenberg ban, people who have committed very minor offenses that include pushing, shoving or, in some cases, merely yelling at a family member can no longer own a firearm for self-defense.
The Lautenberg gun ban should be repealed, not expanded.

THE FDA: AN AGENCY OUT OF CONTROL

The real story shows that the FDA has spent the last hundred years boosting the profits of drug companies and eliminating competition to those companies, acting as a misguided police force that has little to do with public safety.
This year the FDA is being given more money (federal funding up 5% to 1.5 billion) without any accountability or effective Congressional oversight. This means that instead of using the money to meaningfully improve drug safety, the FDA will carry on its pet projects that include forwarding the health component of the Bush administration’s North American Union, limiting health freedom by harassing dietary supplement companies so as to reduce access to safe and effective drug competition, and actively turning the FDA into a drug company.
Health Care for Profit
Wall Street, international bankers, President Bush, pharmaceutical companies, new biotech companies, the Rockefeller empire, and the FDA have created a new plan for public health. It is a grand vision based on profit. It will use the FDA and, as needed, the Department of Homeland Security as the regulatory police force that ensures compliance in the name of public safety. Legitimate objections may be overpowered in the name of national security.
The definition of terrorist will be expanded to include American citizens who disagree with the government’s plan. This is a new way to stamp out competition. Any person who speaks out against the plan could be harassed, because health care and national defense are now being connected through the threat of biological weapons.
The New Public-Health Plan
There is no need to guess at the nature of this plan. There is no need to hypothesize a grand conspiracy against the rights of individuals. The plan is being clearly and openly stated. The actions of government officials are consistent with what they are, in fact, saying. The plan is a matter of public record.
The new public-health plan amounts to a declaration of war on health freedom and the rights of people to receive the health care that is most likely to relieve their problems. Any doctors who truly believe in giving their patients the best possible care—the legal and moral obligation of every doctor—will soon find themselves joining the fight for health freedom.
The intention of those currently in control is that within five to ten years this plan will be firmly established as the model of future health care for Americans.
The Plan:
1. The personal health data of all Americans will be registered in a national data base owned by the government. This will begin in the summer of 2006 with new bar-coded drug labels and will progress until the database includes every person’s complete medical history.
2. By the time a child enters school, a comprehensive mental-health screen will be performed and “appropriate” medication will be dispensed, part of a national mental-health initiative. All data will go into the national database, branding a child for life. The pilot project for this step in the plan is called TeenScreen, already operating in 43 states.
3. A computer chip will be implanted in every American and be required in order to receive health services. It will contain a person’s health history; it will be programmable (and prone to viruses and computer hackers), and it could have multiple other uses—including tracking the person’s whereabouts as desired by government agencies. Such devices are already approved by the FDA. One example, Verichip, is now being marketed to doctors and hospitals as the VeriMed Patient Identification System. As of March 2006, eighty hospitals and several hundred doctors were already signed up. In addition to storing data, it is a global positioning identification chip.
4. Doctors’ offices will become one large clinical trial for rapid deployment of new and unproven drugs and monitoring of existing drugs. This means a patient going to the doctor may receive care based on a new or ongoing drug trial, not on the best available care. In many cases, patients will be guinea pigs. The FDA considers this step to be their top priority for the next five years. It is called the Critical Path to Personalized Medicine Initiative. In 2006, it received its first federal funding.
5. Individuals will have no personal rights to sue if they are damaged by a drug. Protection currently offered to U.S. citizens by state law is actively being overturned by the FDA. The FDA is now working on the side of drug companies and against the safety of the people it is supposed to be protecting.
6. The DNA of every citizen will be on file with the FDA. Newly developed drugs, based on the new sciences of proteomics and nanotechnology, will require analysis of protein molecules based on the person’s DNA and cellular function. Under the false guise of progress and safety, Americans will be conned into handing over their DNA to the federal government. This will lead to all manner of superiority/racial profiling based on DNA, promoting the new eugenics for the 21st century—the Rockefeller dream.
7. New international patent laws are allowing large multinational companies, with the help of aggressive law firms, to control all meaningful life-science inventions. They are specifically trying to control patents relating to natural life processes in the body, as well as the processes by which nutrition and herbs work in the body (realizing these are oftentimes superior to current drugs). Beware of any company seeking patents relating to natural life function.
8. The availability of beneficial nutritional supplementation as a health option will be gone. Large drug companies, with the help of various governments (including the U.S. government), are seeking to force companies selling high-quality nutritional health options out of business. Once gone, they plan to take over the business for themselves, restricting useful options that compete with best-selling drugs and jacking up the prices on what remains. They will also try to patent natural health options, turning them into expensive pharmaceutical drugs. The European example already shows elevated supplement prices for low potency and poor quality, a sign of things to come in America.
Each of these points is fully underway. Solutions are possible, but not if Americans fail to understand what is occurring.
The Attack on Natural Health
The largest barrier to implementing this grand plan, which is actually a global plan, is the citizens of the United States. Americans currently enjoy more health freedom than any other country in the world. The alternative health-care industry is fueled by small supplement companies that promote safe and effective natural health options—the true champions of the people’s cause.
Under the pretense of public safety the FDA, Bush administration, and various congressional leaders are attacking alternative health care. This is a concerted and well-planned aggressive attack on health freedom in America, part of the global effort to control health-related profits.
The natural-health industry is attempting to fight back. Despite overwhelming support by the majority of Americans, it remains an uphill struggle. On November 10, 2005, a bill was placed before Congress by Ron Paul (R-TX) as H.R. 4282, the Health Freedom Protection Act. This bill and any similar legislation need massive public support.
What is the real reason the FDA is actively suppressing alternative health options? One of the values of nutrition is that it offers great hope with little risk. Drugs, not vitamins, are killing 100,000 Americans a year and sending 1.6 million people to the hospital with adverse reactions. High-quality alternative health options actually might help someone get well. Drug companies profit from people remaining sick.

Obama Addresses 9/11 Government Complicity Possible President responds to an Infowars reader

Democrat Presidential frontrunner Senator Barack Obama has responded to a question posed by an Infowars reader regarding government complicity in the September 11th 2001 terrorist attacks.
Three months after the reader sent Obama a correspondence outlining her great concern that criminal elements of the government were directly complicit in the attacks, the Senator sent the following response via email, which was then forwarded to us:

The series of clear warnings about the potential use of hijacked planes as weapons is just one example of why the "surprise" of 9/11 should have been anticipated. In my view, proof of government complicity is not necessary when making the argument that the U.S. should accept some responsibility for what happened on 9/11.

It is no surprise then that Obama dismisses the claims of complicity out of hand and cites the official conspiracy theory that 'mistakes' and 'blunders' account for the full stand down of U.S. air defenses on 9/11, the desist orders to FBI officials investigating Bin Laden immediately prior to the attacks, and the vast amount of insider profiteering that occurred - to name just a smattering of the core issues.
The Senator is more than willing to say that the U.S. should bear some responsibility for the attacks yet stays silent on whether a true independent investigation should be carried out to, at the very least, punish those responsible for said 'blunders' and, at most, uncover the truth that has been hidden behind a wall of whitewashing.
The fact remains that the only Presidential candidate who would seriously consider a new 9/11 investigation is Texas Congressman Ron Paul. Appearing on The Alex Jones Show last month [ MP3 link ] he had the following to say about 9/11:
CALLER: I want a complete, impartial, and totally independent investigation of the events of September 11, 2001 . I'm tired of this bogus garbage about terrorism. Ask Michael Meacher about how he feels about this bogus war on terrorism. Can you comment on that please?
HON. DR. RON PAUL: Well, that would be nice to have. Unfortunately, we don't have that in place. It will be a little bit better now with the Democrats now in charge of oversight. But you know, for top level policy there's not a whole lot of difference between the two policies so a real investigation isn't going to happen. But I think we have to keep pushing for it. And like you and others, we see the investigations that have been done so far as more or less cover-up and no real explanation of what went on.

San Francisco, CA: Cannabis significantly reduces HIV-associated neuropathic pain compared to placebo, and possesses an acceptable margin of safety for use, according to clinical trial data to be published in the journal Neurology. Investigators at San Francisco General Hospital and the University of California's Pain Clinical Research Center assessed the efficacy of inhaled cannabis on HIV-associated sensory neuropathy in 50 volunteers participating in a five-day double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. Researchers reported that smoking low-grade cannabis (3.56 percent THC) three times daily reduced patients' pain by 34 percent. "Thirteen of 25 patients randomized to cannabis cigarettes had >30 percent reduction in pain from baseline to end of treatment versus 6 of 25 patients receiving placebo cigarettes," authors wrote. A 30 percent reduction in pain is considered to be a clinically significant amount of pain relief. Investigators added: "Smoking the first cannabis cigarette reduced chronic pain ratings by a median of 72 percent versus a reduction of 15 percent with placebo [zero THC] cigarettes. On day five, just prior to smoking the last cigarette, median ratings of current chronic pain intensity were lower in the cannabis group than in the placebo group. Smoking the last cigarette further reduced chronic pain ratings 51 percent in the cannabis group versus five percent in the placebo group." They concluded: "Smoked cannabis was well tolerated and effectively relieved chronic neuropathic pain from HIV-associated neuropathy [in a manner] similar to oral drugs used for chronic neuropathic pain." The lead investigator of the study, Donald Abrams of San Francisco General Hospital, initially sought federal approval to assess the potential medical efficacy of cannabis in HIV patients in 1994, but was repeatedly denied access to the US government¹s supply of research-grade marijuana. Today's study is one of the first US-led clinical trials evaluating the efficacy of smoked cannabis to take place in nearly two decades. The University of California's Center for Medicinal Cannabis Research sponsored the trial. Previous clinical trials assessing the use of cannabinoids as analgesics have demonstrated that they can significantly reduce the neuropathy associated with multiple sclerosis, diabetes, cancer, and rheumatoid arthritis. Neuropathic pain affects an estimated one percent of the world's population and is typically unresponsive to both opioids and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as ibuprofen. FDA Warns Consumers Not to Eat Certain Jars of Peter Pan Peanut Butter and Great Value Peanut ButterProduct May be Contaminated With Salmonella
The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning consumers not to eat certain jars of Peter Pan peanut butter or Great Value peanut butter due to risk of contamination with Salmonella Tennessee (a bacterium that causes foodborne illness). The affected jars of Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter have a product code located on the lid of the jar that begins with the number "2111." Both the Peter Pan and Great Value brands are manufactured in a single facility in Georgia by ConAgra. Great Value peanut butter made by other manufacturers is not affected.
If consumers have any of this Peter Pan or Great Value brand peanut butter in their home that has been purchased since May 2006, they should discard it.
Symptoms of foodborne illness caused by Salmonella include fever, diarrhea and abdominal cramps. In persons with poor underlying health or weakened immune systems, Salmonella can invade the bloodstream and cause life-threatening infections. Individuals who have recently eaten Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter beginning with product code 2111 and have experienced any of these symptoms should contact their doctor or health care provider immediately. Any such illnesses should be reported to state or local health authorities.
FDA's warning is based on a just-completed epidemiological study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the states and local health agencies, which links 288 cases of foodborne illness in 39 states to consumption of varying types of Peter Pan peanut butter. This report was provided to FDA on February 13.
The outbreak appears to be ongoing and the first consumer may have become ill in August 2006. The cause of foodborne illnesses can be difficult to identify. As a result of extensive epidemiological testing and recent case control studies, CDC was recently able to identify Peter Pan peanut butter as the likely cause of illness. Great Value brand peanut butter beginning with product code 2111 is manufactured in the same plant as Peter Pan peanut butter and, thus, is believed to be at similar risk of contamination.
ConAgra is recalling all Peter Pan and Great Value peanut butter beginning with product code 2111 that already was distributed. The company also is destroying all affected products in their possession. The company will cease production until the exact cause of contamination can be identified and eliminated. ConAgra will advise consumers to destroy any Peter Pan and Great Value brand peanut butter beginning with product code 2111 in their possession. To assist in this endeavor, FDA has sent investigators to ConAgra's processing plant in Sylvester, Georgia where the products are made to review records, collect product samples and conduct tests for Salmonella Tennessee.
FDA will provide regular updates as more information becomes available.

With its tranquil ponds and rolling fields, the GTC Biotherapeutics farm in Charlton, Massachusetts, looks like a typical pastoral retreat. But its 1,400 goats don't produce any butter or cheese. Instead, the animals are sophisticated drug incubators, with millions of dollars of potential profit accumulating in their udders each day.
GTC Biotherapeutics is among several companies worldwide perfecting the art of "pharming" -- genetically modifying animals to churn out drugs for disorders like hemophilia and cancer. The first government-approved drug from transgenic animals, GTC's anti-clotting agent ATryn, was approved in Europe late last year, vindicating biotech's years-long quest to steer animal husbandry in entirely new directions.
With the approval of the anti-clotting agent, the drug industry will now likely increase the use of transgenic animals, says Robert Kay, CEO of Origen Therapeutics. Kay predicted drug makers will try to develop several transgenic animal "systems," including mice, rats, goats, cows, pigs, sheep and chickens.

Bromenshenk says, "We don't want to panic the beekeeper industry because we are not sure it's time to push the panic button yet, but we do know this is real, it's severe and it's widespread."

Industrial Hemp Farming Act introduced in CongressMike SheehanPublished: Tuesday February 13, 2007An act to legitimize hemp farming has been introduced in Congress, according to a press release.
"For the second time since the federal government outlawed hemp farming in the United States," the release states, "a federal bill has been introduced that would remove restrictions on the cultivation of non-psychoactive industrial hemp."
Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX), a maverick 2008 presidential candidate, is the chief sponsor behind the bill, H.R. 1009. Nine co-sponsors, including fellow White House hopeful Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) and Rep. Barney Frank (D-MA), are all Democrats.
The bill "would give states the right to regulate farming of the versatile hemp crop," the release says.
"It is indefensible that the United States government prevents American farmers from growing this crop," the release quotes Rep. Paul. "The prohibition subsidizes farmers in countries from Canada to Romania by eliminating American competition and encourages jobs in industries such as food, auto parts and clothing that utilize industrial hemp to be located overseas instead of in the United States."
Paul states that the passing of the act would "help American farmers and reduce the trade deficit -- all without spending a single taxpayer dollar."
The release cites fifteen states which have passed pro-hemp legislation, including seven (Hawaii, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Montana, North Dakota and West Virginia) which "have removed barriers to its production or research." Rep. Paul's bill would, the statement continues, "remove federal barriers and allow laws in these states regulating the growing and processing of industrial hemp to take effect."
A hemp activist leader, quoted in the release, asserts that "the DEA has taken the Controlled Substances Act's antiquated definition of marijuana out of context and used it as an excuse to ban industrial hemp farming" and says passage of the new act "will bring us back to more rational times when the government regulated marijuana, but told farmers they could go ahead and continue raising hemp just as they always had."

WASHINGTON - The government on Monday restricted use of an antibiotic linked to rare reports of severe liver problems, including several deaths, saying the drug now should be used only to treat pneumonia but not less serious bacterial infections like bronchitis and sinusitis.
The Food and Drug Administration said the antibiotic, Ketek, would remain on the market but that its label will bear a new, stern warning. The agency said it and manufacturer Sanofi-Aventis SA also created a guide for patients outlining the drug’s risks and its safe use.

The Real Reasons Why Raw Milk is Becoming More Popular

I was happy to see a published story that documents how some families have become aware of the health benefits of raw milk and are switching to it, despite the warnings of public health officials who are ignorant about the serious damage that pasteurization does to the quality of the milk.
Less than 1 percent of the milk consumed in America is raw, which is most unfortunate as raw milk is a highly health-promoting food. Public health officials warn that raw milk poses the risk of transmitting bacteria such as listeria, E. coli and salmonella, but pasteurizing the milk kills these bacteria while extending the milk's shelf life, which also happens to be more profitable for the dairy industry.
While it is certainly possible to become sick from drinking contaminated raw milk, it is also possible to become sick from almost any food source. But it seems that raw milk has been unfairly singled out as a risk, when only a very small risk exists. This excerpt from the Weston A. Price Foundation Web site further states my point:
Except for a brief hiatus in 1990, raw milk has always been for sale commercially in California, usually in health food stores, although I can remember a period when it was even sold in grocery stores. Millions of people consumed commercial raw milk during that period and although the health department kept an eagle eye open for any possible evidence of harm, not a single incidence was reported. During the same period, there were many instances of contamination in pasteurized milk, some of which resulted in death.
Fortunately, even though the sale of raw milk is legal only in a limited number of states, more and more people are realizing its benefits and finding their own legal sources. Here are a few of the major reasons why more people are choosing to drink their milk raw.
It Has More Nutrients
Raw milk is an outstanding source of nutrients including beneficial bacteria such as lactobacillus acidolphilus, vitamins and enzmes, and it is, in my estimation, the finest source of calcium available.
The pasteurization process, which entails heating the milk to a temperature of 145 degrees to 150 degrees F and keeping it there for at least half an hour and then reducing the temperature to not more than 55 degrees F, completely changes the structure of the milk proteins (denaturization) into something far less than healthy. While the process certainly destroys germs and bad bacteria, it also destroys the milk's beneficial bacteria along with many of its nutritious components.
Pasteurizing milk destroys enzymes, diminishes vitamin, denatures fragile milk proteins, destroys vitamin B12, and vitamin B6, kills beneficial bacteria and promotes pathogens. You may notice that raw milk left out will sour naturally but pasteurized milk will rot. This is because the beneficial bacteria in the raw milk helps to keep putrefactive bacteria under control. Pasteurized milk, however, does not have any of the beneficial bacteria left to keep it from rotting.
Then, of course there is the issue of the antibiotics, pesticides and growth hormones and the fact that nearly all commercial dairy cows are raised on grains, not grass, like they were designed to. This will change the composition of the fats in the milk, especially the CLA content.
People Feel the Health Benefits
Pasteurized cow's milk is the number one allergic food in this country. It has been associated with a number of symptoms and illnesses including:
Diarrhea
Cramps
Bloating
Gas
Gastrointestinal bleeding
Iron-deficiency anemia
Skin rashes
Allergies
Colic in infants
Osteoporosis
Increased tooth decay
Arthritis
Increased tooth decay
Growth problems in children

Raw milk, on the other hand, is not associated with any of these problems, and even people who have been allergic to pasteurized milk for many years can typically tolerate and even thrive on raw milk.
Raw milk is truly one of the most profoundly healthy foods you can consume, and you'll feel the difference once you start to drink it.
It Tastes Better
As with any food, fresher is always better and this applies to milk as well. Fresh raw milk is creamier and better tasting than pasteurized milk that has a shelf-life of several weeks. Ultra-high-temperature milk can be stored without refrigeration for about six months.
Even people who have never liked the taste of milk find that raw milk has a soothing, pleasant taste that they can't resist.
Obtaining raw milk can be a challenge but it is well worth the effort to seek out. You can go to www.realmilk.com for some help, but if you are unable to find any through that site I would suggest contacting a dairy farmer and asking him or her to buy the raw milk directly.
It is technically illegal to sell in many states but many people tell them they are using the milk for their pets. Alternatively, another strategy that has stood nearly every legal test is the cow-share program. One merely purchases a small ownership of a cow for $10 or $20 and then the farmer is able to sell you the milk from the cow as you are part owner and it is perfectly legal to drink raw milk from your own cow.

That’s a bogus issue.Set aside cervical cancer and there are still plenty of frightening things for girls about having sex — getting AIDS, getting pregnant, getting a sexually transmitted disease.Illinois Senate President Emil Jones has introduced a bill that would mandate all 11- and 12- year-old girls to receive a vaccination against the human papillomavirus (HPV) that causes cervical cancer. Beginning Aug. 1, 2009, girls would not be allowed to enter any grade of a public, private, or parochial school unless they present to the school proof of having received the vaccine. Final approval on the legislation is expected in the next few weeks. The bills would require shots for all girls entering sixth grade in the 2009 school year. Rick Perry's executive order regarding the HPV vaccine. Perry bypassed the legislative process and ordered a law that mandates mandatory vaccination against HPV for girls entering the sixth grade. "Although I support the governor in the action he's trying to propose, it has created such a firestorm because the legislators think they're being cut out of the process," bill author Sen. Leticia Van de Putte said.Sen. Jane Nelson, chair of the Health and Human Services Commission, is the one carrying most of the burden since she will have to carry out the governor's order. Nelson has asked for help from the state attorney general's office. It won't offer an opinion for 180 days. Even some watchdog groups like the Center for Public Policy Priorities believe Perry's move is unconstitutional. "What can't happen is for the governor to just wake up one morning and say, 'we're going to have a new law in the state of Texas. I just wrote it. You have to have a whole rule-making proceeding where the public gets notice, the public gets an opportunity to come and comment, the executive commissioner has to consider their comments, and then develop a rule based on those comments," CPPP Executive Director Scott McCown said. Twenty-six senators from both parties even signed a letter asking Perry to withdraw the order. Now it's up to the governor to decide if the controversy will continue. "I would prefer, for the good of the safety of the process and also so that we can get this really good public policy, that the legislature should decide this and not by executive order," Van de Putte said. Perry is also being criticized because the vaccine's manufacturer contributed to his re-election campaign. Even if the governor doesn't withdraw the order on his own, some watchdog groups believe he'll have to do it at some point. They feel the attorney general's office will side with pulling the measure. Either that, or it could wind up in the courts.

Drugs, Guns & Uncovering the Truth

A few weeks ago two Ozark County residents were sentenced in federal court on marijuana charges and possession of firearms. They had already been sentenced at a state level and have been serving probation, fines and drug court for a year. The federal government decided to take an interest in this case and the couple ended up facing federal charges. Now one will be in home arrest and probation and the other will be serving 18 months in prison. There was no violent crime committed; the guns found in the home were hunting rifles and two handguns for home protection. Neither individual was a felon so how did this end up in federal court? Under federal law it is illegal for an unlawful user or addict to be in possession of a firearm. Do they have to prove that you are an addict or unlawful user, not necessarily. Under federal law, certain people are prohibited from having guns or ammunition. That list includes people with felony convictions, people who are addicted to or abuse illegal drugs, illegal aliens, and people who have an order of protection from a court against them. Also, there has to be a federal nexus. If the party is found in possession of a firearm and that firearm was manufactured in another state it eventually had to be brought across the state line into Missouri. There are no firearms manufactured in Missouri, so everybody in Missouri caught with a gun, there's automatic federal jurisdiction, because that firearm at some point had to cross the state line in interstate commerce.
What does interstate commerce have to do with any of this you might ask? It has a lot. Even if you are not for the legal use of marijuana you should be interested in the laws surrounding the War on Drugs because it has a lot to do with your rights to bear arms and federal jurisdiction. In cases regarding medical marijuana users the question had been asked: does the federal government have the authority to prosecute people possessing marijuana under Congress’s authority to regulate interstate commerce?
In the case of Gonzales v. Raich Justice Thomas's opening paragraph really captures the absurdity of the commerce clause: "Respondents Diane Monson and Angel Raich use marijuana that has never been bought or sold, that has never crossed state lines, and that has had no demonstrable effect on the national market for marijuana. If Congress can regulate this under the Commerce Clause, then it can regulate virtually anything--and the Federal Government is no longer one of limited and enumerated powers."
In the case of the Ozark County couple this was one of those victimless crimes. Victimless crimes are very hard to prove. Proof is lowered to a level that all one has to do is possess a gun, drug or money alleged to be used in illegal transactions. This opens the door for thousands of people to be imprisoned with little or no evidence.
We did not have an illegal drug in the United States until 1914.
In 1914 a survey determined that 1.3% of the population was addicted to heroin.
The anti drug act was passed in 1914 making opiates illegal and then cocaine, marijuana and so on.
In 1970 another survey was taken and showed 1.3% of the population was addicted to drugs…so began the war on drugs.
Since the war on drugs began trillions of dollars have been spent in prosecuting and every year we spend 69 million dollars on the war on drugs, which very little of that money is spent on drug education.
There have been 35 million arrests to date for non-violent drug offences (10% of the population).
2.2 million people are in prison and the mass majority of those prisoners are incarcerated for drug offences.
Still today…surveys show that 1.3% of the population is addicted to drugs.
Nothing has changed in 100 years.
According to statistics the #1 addictive drug is nicotine, the 2nd worst drug is alcohol yet these are not illegal drugs. I would have to say that alcohol alone is one of the main contributors to violent crimes in this country. I always hear that marijuana is the stepping-stone to harder drug use. If I had to choose a drug that was a stepping-stone to harder drug use it would have to be alcohol. There are 540,000 deaths a year resulting from nicotine and alcohol addiction and only 121,000 deaths a year from illegal drugs such as heroin, meth and cocaine use.
Other legal addicting drugs are sugar, caffeine and yes television.
Today according to officials such as John Edwards the worst and most dangerous drug is marijuana. Dangerous to whom? Cannabis has been used for thousands of years yet there have been no recorded deaths, side effects or harmful effects that has been evidenced to this day.
It’s all about money.

The U.S. would use a country to make drugs to sell in the United States and take the profits to buy arms to fight secret wars. But that’s another can of worms.

The conviction of non-violent drug offences is big money. Big money for the prison industry.
Prisons are the fastest growing industry in the United States quadrupling in a 20-year period and some have even become privatized… Prison for Profit. The privatized prisons now hire lobbyist to lobby congress for tougher penalties for drug users and longer sentences.
The average cost to a taxpayer is 26,000 per prisoner per year.

The upcoming 2008 elections should have the drug and gun policies as one of there top formats for those who are running … this would be a chance to see what these politicians are truly made of.

The legalization of drugs: The addiction rate for drugs has not changed in 100 years.
Since the war on drugs there has been no reduction in drug use or addiction and there would be no drug increase if they were legalized as I have shown in the previous statistics. By legalizing drugs the numbers may actually start to decrease. As long as something is illegal there is a market value instantly put on that item which can be as high as over 1000% mark up. If an item is legal the market value decreases if not eliminated over night. No drive by shootings over drug sales, no robberies to buy drugs and so on just like when alcohol prohibition was abolished. When alcohol was illegal gangsters had a market, there was increased violence. When alcohol became legal the mob members trafficking alcohol were out of business overnight.

The war on plants: In this country we have made the possession and use of some plants illegal and the list is growing every day including control over your vitamin use and where you are even allowed or not allowed to have a garden. I’m not kidding!

But let’s stay focused on Cannabis/ Hemp
Cannabis was legal in the United States up until the 1930’s. What happened in the 30’s?
Up until the 30’s hemp was used for fuel, oils, textiles, food and medicinal purposes.
50% of medicines were based on hemp up until the 1930’s. The leaves from this plant are one of the best antibiotics on the planet. Linens were originally made from hemp. When the pilgrims first came over to the Americas the sails on the ships were made of hemp along with their ropes and clothes. Sailors would carry 4-5 hundred pounds of hemp seed on their ships just in case they ever got stranded they would have a resource they could plant and use. So what happened in the 30’s? In 1934 the federal government passed the National Firearms Act. Then three years later they passed the Marijuana Tax Act of 1937 and then the Federal Firearms Act of 1938. The Commerce Clause of the Constitution was stretched to pass both of these unconstitutional laws.

William Randolph Hearst
He was a large property owner that had a lot of forest he wanted to turn into paper and other products. Hearst had a battle with Poncho Villa. Poncho Villa had actually taken some of the land from Hearst during this time, which angered Hearst. Also in 1936 there was a new invention, which was being introduced. It was the decorticator, which allowed the hemp to be stripped and processed without excessive manual labor. The announcement of this new machine introduced it as the new billion-dollar crop. The term billion dollars was rarely heard of at that time. A few greedy men knew this would destroy their hopes for making money. Hearst had to get hemp production stopped but knew he could not present the name hemp to congress because everyone at the time new that hemp was such a wonderful crop so he came up with an interesting Spanish word derived from a song called ‘la cucaracha’. At the end of this song it refers to smoking marijuana. Knowing that the public at that time would look down on a Mexican name (the race card being played), Hearst took the name marijuana to congress and stated we had to do away with this evil plant that made people crazy. Before the people new what had happened and realized that he was referring to hemp it was to late. Hemp became illegal. After this Hearst went into the paper industry and Dupont introduced a new product - nylon and other companies started developing more unnatural products in the place of hemp. It was all about money. The war on drugs is not a war against drugs it is a war against people.

The United States Government considers cannabis/hemp the most dangerous drug but it’s ok when they have a need for it. During WWII rope supplies were cut off to the U.S. by China, which still made their rope with hemp. The U.S. needed to get the farmers to start producing hemp again even after being told what an evil plant it was. In 1942 the Department of Agriculture made a film called “ Hemp for Victory “ describing all the wonderful aspects and products that could be made from the plant. When the war was over there was no more urgent need, cannabis remained illegal and the film is forever buried in the library of congress.

Again it’s all about money and control. Pharmaceutical companies, tobacco industry and alcohol industry fund the partnership of Drug Free America. These are also ties with petroleum control and use. Even the prescribed medications people use today are petroleum-based products. It would be safe to say that most prescription drugs that are used today are not only highly addictive but are more dangerous to your health than some illegal drugs. If we used hemp today, as fuel there would be no need to fight over oil control such has been done in Somalia & Iraq. We just wouldn’t need it.

Our planet is full of toxic fuels, fabrics and chemicals. The car you drive emits toxic fumes; the clothes you wear are full of pesticides and toxic fabrics. The foods we eat are poison filled with pesticides, synthetic and genetically modified elements and even radiated. The homes we live in are full of toxic chemicals that are used to treat wood, plaster boards and even the carpet is treated with harmful chemicals. The paint on your walls and on the paintings that hang on our walls is painted with toxic chemicals. Until the 1930’s all paints were made of hemp oil.

Dr. Roberta Hamilton a UCLA Researcher and Biochemist in one of her studies determined that hemp seed was one of the most nutritious foods on the planet. Hemp seed has 8 amino acids and 3 essential fatty acids. Hemp seed can clean the arteries and reduce chances of heart attack and lowers cholesterol levels. Hemp seed is legal in the United States as bird food. Jack Herer once stated that if you piled up all the birdseed in layers the birds would dig out the hemp seed first. The birds know. It can also be turned into a cream and when applied to the skin forms with the collagen in the skin to get rid of wrinkles. It replenishes the immune system. The German’s use to plant hemp around their crops to keep bugs out because the hemp plant needs no pesticides to grow, it produces it’s own. The roots from the hemp plant replenish the soil and the leaf from the plant puts nitrogen back into the soil. It can be used for pain control, depression, sleeping disorders, eating disorders, Cancer treatment, AIDs treatment, it lubricates the brain and can reduce brain damage in head trauma patients, it is used for glaucoma, as an analgesic, epilepsy, migraines, can relieve tics in patients with OCD or Tourette syndrome, in recent studies it is suggested that the use of cannabis could prevent Alzheimer’s Disease, a spray derived from the extract can help treat multiple sclerosis, its found to reduce arterial blockages, it can be used to make clothes, cars, houses, fuel and it is a earth friendly fuel and hemp is biodegradable. This is exactly what this planet needs right now with increasing air pollution, water contamination, food contamination and what a difference it would make in the economy of the Midwest alone if production was allowed. We are allowed to import these products from other countries but we can’t grow it here because it’s against the drug policy. It’s time for the policy to change. Thousands go to prison every year for using this plant. And these people are criminals? The only criminals I see here are big corporations, greedy people, bad lawmakers, the media for not reporting the truth, and those who seek to retain control over the American people. The American people have been brainwashed into believing something that just isn’t true. Makes you stop and think what else you’ve been lied to about. We all have a mind. It’s time we start using it and start educating ourselves and moving forward to a brighter future for our children and ourselves. It’s time for a change!

SINGAPORE: A bright light across the sky took many Singaporeans by surprise on Sunday evening. Callers to our hotline said that at about 7.40pm, they saw a bright green light across the evening sky. Some described it as a shooting star; others said it was like a satellite re-entering the earth's atmosphere. They also said it was not very high up in the sky and it had streaked over brightly from east to west. It was over in a matter of seconds. Viewers called us from all over Singapore – Serangoon North, Sembawang, Woodlands, Selegie Road, Bedok, Bukit Panjang and Marina South. Ismail Yussof, one of the eyewitnesses, said: "I thought it was a comet. I was stunned, staring at the sky. A lot of people were watching it. His son managed to record the scene with the video function of his mobile phone. "It's like an aeroplane, very big. The front is like a cannon ball, full of colours - orange, yellow, blue and green. And it went off very fast, in about 10 seconds. I could see it very clearly." Nanocables that convert light into electricity could one day be used to power nano-robots.
The cables are 16 nanometres in diameter and several micrometres long. They resemble the light-harvesting antennae used by some bacteria and transform light into electricity in a similar way to the semiconductors in solar panels, albeit on a much smaller scale.
"This is the first example of a photoconducting nanostructure," says Takanori Fukushita of the University of Tokyo, Japan, a member of the team that built the cables.
The hollow cables can grow up to several micrometres long. To build them, Fukushita and colleagues created a compound containing hexabenzocoronene (HBC), two carbon-12 chains, and trinitrofluorenone (TNF). They placed the compound in a solution of tetrahydrofuran and bubbled methane vapour though it, causing the compound to self-assemble into hollow cables.
The HBC, which sheds electrons when hit by light, formed the inside of the cable wall, and the TNF, which readily accepts electrons, coated the outside of the wall.
Light switch
Each time a photon hits the cable from outside it passes through the outer layer and knocks an electron loose from the inner layer. This causes the electron to jump to the outer layer and leave behind a positively charged "hole". These separated charges can then generate a current.
To test the nanocables, the researchers placed one on a silicon surface and applied a voltage across it. When light was shone onto the surface, a current began flowing down the cable between two electrodes. When the light was switched off, the current stopped.
At the moment, the cables cannot produce usable electricity from sunlight alone, as current does not flow well through the outer layer of TNF. The next step, Fukushita says, is to modify the outer layer, perhaps by attaching carbon-60 molecules (buckyballs), so it acts as a semiconductor and allows more current to flow.
Once this has been achieved, the nanocables could be fitted to nano-sized robots or micro-machines and power their movements, suggests Franz Würthner at the University of Würzburg in Germany. Their similarity in size and function to the antennae used by bacteria for photosynthesis means it might also be possible to connect them to such organisms, creating hybrid devices, he says.

Space weather forecasters revised their predictions for storminess after a major flare erupted on the Sun overnight threatening damage to communication systems and power grids while offering up the wonder of Northern Lights.
"We're looking for very strong, severe geomagnetic storming" to begin probably around mid-day Thursday, Joe Kunches, Lead Forecaster at the NOAA Space Environment Center, told SPACE.com this afternoon.
The storm is expected to generate aurora or Northern Lights, as far south as the northern United States Thursday night. Astronauts aboard the International Space Station are not expected to be put at additional risk, Kunches said.
Radio communications, satellites and power grids could face potential interruptions or damage, however.
Solar flares send radiation to Earth within minutes. Some are also accompanied by coronal mass ejections (CME), clouds of charged particles that arrive in a day or two. This flare unleashed a strong CME that's aimed squarely at Earth.
"It's got all the right stuff," Kunches said.
However, one crucial component to the storm is unknown: its magnetic orientation. If it lines up a certain way with Earth's magnetic field, then the storm essentially pours into our upper atmosphere. If the alignment is otherwise, the storm can pass by the planet with fewer consequences.
Kunches and his team are advising satellite operators and power grid managers to keep an eye on their systems. In the past, CMEs have knocked out satellites and tripped terrestrial power grids. Engineers have learned to limit switching at electricity transfer stations, and satellite operators sometimes reduce operations or make back-up plans in case a craft is damaged.
Another aspect of a CME involves protons that get pushed along by the shock wave. Sometimes these protons break through Earth's protective magnetic field and flood the outer reaches of the atmosphere—where the space station orbits—with radiation. The science of it all is a gray area, Kunches said. But the best guess now is that there will only be a slight increase in proton activity. That's good news for the astronauts.
"When the shock goes by, we don't expect significant radiation issues," he said.
The astronauts were ordered to a protective area of the space station as a precaution last night.
Now that sunspot number 930 has flared so significantly—after several days of being quiet—the forecast calls for a "reasonble chance" of more major flares in coming days, Kunches said.

A video game that depicts a crusade of violence by Christians could be heading for the bestseller charts this Christmas, even though it has been condemned by Muslims and secularists.
The game Left Behind: Eternal Forces is set in post-apocalyptic New York and features God's army battling the Antichrist.

Based on the bestselling Christian fantasy Left Behind series created by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins, it puts players in command of brainwashed legions fighting the "good fight" for Christianity.
Gamers are ordered to convert or kill in order to re-model America as a Christian-controlled state, and establish its world vision of Christ's dominion over all aspects of life.
Gamers pit battles between the paramilitary Christian Tribulation Force and the grey, faceless Global Community forces of the Antichrist, said to be modelled on the United Nations.
If the Christians fail to convert others to their religion they must kill them in order to progress to the next level, dismissing any other form of religion.
The fantasy is an imagined scenario based on what might happen if the events depicted in the Book of Revelation, the last book of the Bible and the ultimate in theological end games, were to take place today.
Critics accuse its creators of mixing religion and violence to appeal to teenagers hooked on violent games like Grand Theft Auto.
Aimed at 13-plus teenagers and originally sold in the US, where the storyline is based, UK outlets are now releasing the game in time for Christmas. It will capitalise on the success of the Left Behind books, which have sold more than 63 million copies worldwide.
Muslim religious groups have denounced the game as portraying their faith as evil and accused its creators of insulting their creed. Ironically, the conservative Christian lobby has often been most vociferous in its denunciations of on-screen violence.
A spokesperson for the Muslim Association of Britain called for the game to be banned, describing it as evil.
He said: "This game is irresponsible and highly racist. It demonises every other religion which isn't Christianity. People must boycott this violent game.
"It is a game that is prejudiced not just towards Muslims but every other religion which is not Christianity.
"Games like this poison the minds of young people and we urge people to boycott it."
Terry Sanderson, President of the National Secular Society, said: "Fundamentalists on both the Christian and the Muslim side are creating this kind of nasty, extreme propaganda and aiming it at young people.
"Parents need to be on their guard. I'm not into banning things or censoring them, but I think most Muslims and most Christians would recognise that this is crude and despicable hate-mongering and give it a wide berth. It is up to parents to ensure that their children are not exposed to this loathsome trash."
Anti-Racist campaigner John Hutson, who has written a number of books on bridging the faith divide, fears the game will foster prejudice and should have never been given a certificate for release in the UK.

Creators Left Behind Games have dismissed the criticism, saying the religious storyline in the game is not taken from the bible and is a creation of the Left Behind authors which should not be taken seriously.
Troy A. Lyndon, Left Behind Games Chief Executive, said: "The game is designed to be a classic battle between good and evil.
"We have deliberately censored the blood and it does not gratuitously depict death or violence.
"Left Behind is not taken from the Bible, it is a fictional story.
"In the initial missions, there is little emphasis on physical warfare and gamers are introduced to powers of influence which result in a battle for the hearts and minds of people."
The game was released in the US on September 9 and was released in the UK on November 14.

Using insights into the theories he comes up with an answer to the object's origin similar to Wernher von Braun’s mentor, mathematician and physicist, Dr. Hermann Oberth who suggests, albeit some years later, that the Roswell craft should not be considered a spacecraft but a Time Machine.

The stated goals of current U.S.drug policy -- reducing crime, drug addiction, and juvenile drug use -- have not been achieved, even after nearly four decades of a policy of "war on drugs". This policy, fueled by over a trillion of our tax dollars has had little or no effect on the levels of drug addiction among our fellow citizens, but has instead resulted in a tremendous increase in crime and in the numbers of Americans in our prisons and jails. With 4.6% of the world's population, America today has 22.5% of the worlds prisoners. But, after all that time, after all the destroyed lives and after all the wasted resources, prohibited drugs today are cheaper, stronger, and easier to get than they were thirty-five years ago at the beginning of the so-called "war on drugs".
With this in mind, we current and former members of law enforcement have created a drug-policy reform movement -- LEAP. We believe that to save lives and lower the rates of disease, crime and addiction. as well as to conserve tax dollars, we must end drug prohibition. LEAP believes that a system of regulation and control of production and distribution will be far more effective and ethical that one of prohibition.

The changing appearance of gullies on Mars over the last seven years suggests that liquid water flowed recently on the Red Planet and may still seep out in brief bursts, researchers said Wednesday.
In what is billed as "the squirting gun," new images of known gullies on Mars show evidence of new flows and deposits, pointing to explosive events in which some form of water burst from crater walls and ran down their slopes.
"We've had this story of ancient water on Mars," researcher Kenneth Edgett, who participated in the Mars gully study, said during a news briefing at NASA's Washington headquarters. "Today we're talking about liquid water that is present on Mars right now."

Because of the sunspot's location near the limb, the flare was not Earth-directed. Future eruptions could be, however, because the Sun's spin is turning the spot toward Earth. Sunspot 929 will be visible for the next two weeks as it glides across the solar disk.

Lightning strike kills white buffalo

Lightning on Sunday night struck and killed two buffalo cows and three buffalo calves, including a white buffalo-Miracle's Second Chance-on the Heider farm south of Janesville, Dave Heider said this morning.Heider discovered the five dead buffalo when he went to check on the animals this morning before going to work. The white calf's mother was walking around and grunting, so Heider followed her up the hill where he found the five dead buffalo with burn marks laying near a tree. He thinks it was one lightning strike that hit all five and the nearby tree. The farm became a destination for thousands of visitors after Miracle, a female white buffalo, was born there on Aug. 20, 1994. In 1995, visitors to the Heider farm increased tourism to Rock County by 22 percent. White buffalo are extremely rare and are said to fulfill a Native American legend foretelling peace. Miracle died in 2004 and is now stuffed in the Heider gift shop.A male white buffalo was born on the farm Aug. 25 this year. "How many times in a lifetime does lighting strike?" Heider said to The Janesville Gazette after the second birth. Sunday's storm answered his question, again.Earlier this year, lightning struck a couple of his Scottish Highlander cows, Heider said, but it had never happened to any of his buffalo. He said they figured they'd better "call it in and get it on the news wire" so people wanting to visit the white buffalo wouldn't be surprised."I suppose it's going to be a great loss to a lot of people," he said. Since the August birth, "a lot of people" have called about visiting the farm, including people from Canada, he said. Sunday night's thunderstorm brought 0.24 inches of rain to the area."It's just coincidence, I guess, that lightning struck twice," he said. "He (Miracle's Second Chance) was born in a storm and died in a storm."

Questions Loom After Danvers Explosion & Fire

The explosions occurred about 2:50 a.m. Wednesday at CAI Inc., a manufacturer of solvents and inks. They sparked a 10-alarm fire that attracted a response from 30 cities and towns surrounding this town about 20 miles northeast of Boston. Amazingly, no one was seriously hurt.The chemical plant, which was empty at the time, was leveled, and officials said it could take weeks to reconstruct the accident and determine the cause. The roof on a building holding a pizza shop and bakery was torn open and caved in. Fire Chief James Tutko said the nearly 90 homes in the neighborhood all suffered some damage, and up to 25 may need to be rebuilt.
The miracle is you have the equivalent of a 2,000-pound bomb going off in a residential neighborhood at night when everybody is home, and no one's dead and no one is seriously injured," the governor said.

CHupacabra in the Midwest

JOHNSON COUNTY--A strange animal in one Arkansas county has residents looking for answers as to what it is. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission say it's a dog, but some residents disagree.
Some people say it's a cross between a wild dog and coyote, but others say there's an air of mystery surrounding the animal. Some even think it has characteristics of a Chupacabra, an animal from a Hispanic legend.
Deer hunters have more than one animal to talk about when they check their hunt in at McCormick's One Stop.
"Everyone that comes in has their own opinion," Matt McCormick said.
Ideas circulate among the customers about this animal, one Johnson County residents' can't agree on what to call it. McCormick's has pictures on the counter if you want to get a good look at it.
They're "just kind of curious as to what it is. It's got everybody's interest perked up," McCormick said.
These pictures were taken October fourth, one day after the animal was shot. The photographer sent them to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission for an answer, and they got one. But many residents say they're not convinced it's a dog with a severe case of mange.
Some people have been digging for another explanation, and they think they found it in the urban legend of Chupacabra. According to the Hispanic legend, Chupacabra can come in three forms one of which is a strange breed of wild dog, mostly hairless with pronounced eye sockets, teeth and claws.
But some people say that idea is far fetched.
"It's a funny colored dog so got to calling it a dog from hell. It's just a regular dog," Johnson County resident Gerry McCartney said.
McCartney says the idea that's it's anything other than a dog is off the wall, because she's had a run-in with the animal in her yard.
"I came out one night and shot up in air to get it gone off my dogs," she said.
People in the county continue to talk of this animal although its dead, they're confident others are alive.
