The Vaccination Machine Strikes Again
New York state has added a new immunization requirement for youngsters.
A bill signed by Gov. George Pataki adds a shot against pneumococcal disease as among those required before children can be enrolled in any day care, nursery school or pre-school program. Under the new law, the requirement will apply to all children born on or after Jan. 1, 2008. Children are already required to be immunized against a range of diseases, including measles, mumps and diphtheria.
Sponsors of the new requirement said pneumococcal disease is the leading cause of bacterial meningitis in the United States and is responsible for more than 200 deaths a year. Other conditions linked to pneumococcal are ear infections and blood infections.
Sponsors said that having the requirement in law would "encourage" insurance companies to cover the cost of the immunizations in their policies.
Now notice the spin here...they now want to make it LAW and not just a Requirement.
