The true scale of Britain's hospital superbug problems emerged today as a leading hospital trust admitted that a 'hypervirulent' infection had claimed the lives of at least 49 patients - and possibly as many as 78 people - in the space of nine months.
The superbug Clostridium difficile (C. difficile), which can cause severe illness and death in patients who have undergone surgery, appears to be at unprecedented levels. It has turned into a more virulent strain, ironically as a result of antibiotics commonly prescribed to fight other infections. The increase in cases is partly due to dirty wards, but also to a shortage of beds. The bacterium has also become more deadly because it has mutated genetically, becoming resistant to other treatments.

Someday, along with jabs against mumps and measles, kids could get vaccinated against nicotine, cocaine and heroin.
Vaccines for cocaine and nicotine have already been tested in humans. Nicotine vaccines, in particular, are getting a lot of attention.
This summer a recruitment campaign got under way across the United States for clinical trials of NicVAX , a nicotine vaccine. Nabi Pharmaceuticals says it is developing NicVAX in order to help "billions worldwide who are addicted to smoking tobacco products or are at risk of becoming addicted."

Monsanto's GE Crops Spawn Herbicide-Resistant Weeds in North Carolina Pigweed resistance a nightmare for Carolina grower
GM WATCH Sept 27, 2006 GM WATCH COMMENT: This article rightly describes glyphosate-resistant pigweed as "a nightmare" for this North Carolina farmer. Based on his experience to date, this is how Bill McGoogan plans to tackle the problem next year: "In 2007, McGoogan says he will probably go back to more cultivation, use pre-plant residual herbicides, most likely Prowl, then come back at the four leaf stage and apply Weathermax. Within a week or so after applying Weathermax, he will likely come back and cultivate and use a post-directed spray, probably Cotoran and MSMA." Ironically, this level of weed management complexity is the direct result of Roundup Ready crops that were supposed to make weed management ultra-convenient!
