Lightning strike kills white buffalo

Lightning on Sunday night struck and killed two buffalo cows and three buffalo calves, including a white buffalo-Miracle's Second Chance-on the Heider farm south of Janesville, Dave Heider said this morning.Heider discovered the five dead buffalo when he went to check on the animals this morning before going to work. The white calf's mother was walking around and grunting, so Heider followed her up the hill where he found the five dead buffalo with burn marks laying near a tree. He thinks it was one lightning strike that hit all five and the nearby tree. The farm became a destination for thousands of visitors after Miracle, a female white buffalo, was born there on Aug. 20, 1994. In 1995, visitors to the Heider farm increased tourism to Rock County by 22 percent. White buffalo are extremely rare and are said to fulfill a Native American legend foretelling peace. Miracle died in 2004 and is now stuffed in the Heider gift shop.A male white buffalo was born on the farm Aug. 25 this year. "How many times in a lifetime does lighting strike?" Heider said to The Janesville Gazette after the second birth. Sunday's storm answered his question, again.Earlier this year, lightning struck a couple of his Scottish Highlander cows, Heider said, but it had never happened to any of his buffalo. He said they figured they'd better "call it in and get it on the news wire" so people wanting to visit the white buffalo wouldn't be surprised."I suppose it's going to be a great loss to a lot of people," he said. Since the August birth, "a lot of people" have called about visiting the farm, including people from Canada, he said. Sunday night's thunderstorm brought 0.24 inches of rain to the area."It's just coincidence, I guess, that lightning struck twice," he said. "He (Miracle's Second Chance) was born in a storm and died in a storm."

Questions Loom After Danvers Explosion & Fire

The explosions occurred about 2:50 a.m. Wednesday at CAI Inc., a manufacturer of solvents and inks. They sparked a 10-alarm fire that attracted a response from 30 cities and towns surrounding this town about 20 miles northeast of Boston. Amazingly, no one was seriously hurt. The chemical plant, which was empty at the time, was leveled, and officials said it could take weeks to reconstruct the accident and determine the cause. The roof on a building holding a pizza shop and bakery was torn open and caved in. Fire Chief James Tutko said the nearly 90 homes in the neighborhood all suffered some damage, and up to 25 may need to be rebuilt.
The miracle is you have the equivalent of a 2,000-pound bomb going off in a residential neighborhood at night when everybody is home, and no one's dead and no one is seriously injured," the governor said.

CHupacabra in the Midwest

JOHNSON COUNTY--A strange animal in one Arkansas county has residents looking for answers as to what it is. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission say it's a dog, but some residents disagree.
Some people say it's a cross between a wild dog and coyote, but others say there's an air of mystery surrounding the animal. Some even think it has characteristics of a Chupacabra, an animal from a Hispanic legend.
Deer hunters have more than one animal to talk about when they check their hunt in at McCormick's One Stop.
"Everyone that comes in has their own opinion," Matt McCormick said.
Ideas circulate among the customers about this animal, one Johnson County residents' can't agree on what to call it. McCormick's has pictures on the counter if you want to get a good look at it.
They're "just kind of curious as to what it is. It's got everybody's interest perked up," McCormick said.
These pictures were taken October fourth, one day after the animal was shot. The photographer sent them to the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission for an answer, and they got one. But many residents say they're not convinced it's a dog with a severe case of mange.
Some people have been digging for another explanation, and they think they found it in the urban legend of Chupacabra. According to the Hispanic legend, Chupacabra can come in three forms one of which is a strange breed of wild dog, mostly hairless with pronounced eye sockets, teeth and claws.
But some people say that idea is far fetched.
"It's a funny colored dog so got to calling it a dog from hell. It's just a regular dog," Johnson County resident Gerry McCartney said.
McCartney says the idea that's it's anything other than a dog is off the wall, because she's had a run-in with the animal in her yard.
"I came out one night and shot up in air to get it gone off my dogs," she said.
People in the county continue to talk of this animal although its dead, they're confident others are alive.

Storm on Saturn

Huge 'hurricane' rages on Saturn
BBC November 10, 2006
A hurricane-like storm, two-thirds the diameter of Earth, is raging at Saturn's south pole, new images from Nasa's Cassini space probe reveal. Measuring 5,000 miles (8,000km) across, the storm is the first hurricane ever detected on a planet other than Earth.
Scientists say the storm has the eye and eye-wall clouds characteristic of a hurricane and its winds are swirling clockwise at 350mph (550km/h).
However, unlike Earth hurricanes it seems stuck at the pole, not drifting.
"It looks like a hurricane, but it doesn't behave like a hurricane," Dr Andrew Ingersoll, a member of Cassini's imaging team at the California Institute of Technology said. "Whatever it is, we're going to focus on the eye of this storm and find out why it's there."
Though Jupiter's Great Red Spot storm moves counter-clockwise, and is far bigger than the storm on Saturn, it does not have the eye and eye-wall that mark out a hurricane. An Earth hurricane's eye and eye-walls form when warm, moist air flows inwards across an ocean's surface and rapidly rises vertically, dropping heavy rain in a circular band around descending air in the eye.
But Saturn is a gaseous planet therefore this storm does not have an ocean at its base.
The Saturn storm is bigger not only in diameter than an Earth hurricane, but in height too, with a ring of huge clouds towering 20-45 miles (30-70km) above the well-developed eye - two to five times higher than in storms on Earth.
Unknown phenomenon
One Nasa scientist, Michael Flasar, told Reuters news agency that the storm looked just like water swirling down a bath plug hole, only on a colossal scale. "We've never seen anything like this before," Mr Flasar said. "It's a spectacular-looking storm."
Fourteen frames of the storm were captured by the Cassini spacecraft over the course of three hours on 11 October 2006.
Cassini was passing about 210,000 miles (340,000km) from the ringed planet as it continues its exploration of Saturn and its moons.
Cassini entered into orbit around Saturn on 1 July 2004. Later that year, it released the piggybacked Huygens probe towards the planet's largest moon, Titan.
Huygens touched down on Titan on 14 January 2005, sending back data on the moon's atmosphere, weather and its surface.
The Cassini-Huygens mission is a co-operative project of the US space agency (Nasa), the European Space Agency (Esa) and the Italian Space Agency (Asi).

Just like in Ancient Times of Atlantis

Human-animal mixing going too far, report says
World Science November 8, 2006
An artist's concept of what a human-dog hybrid might look like. The strange creatures are part of a sculpture by Australian artist Patricia Piccinini entitled "The Young Family," produced to spark reflection on the perils of creating human-animal mixtures.
Scientists are going too far in creating mixed human-animal organisms, a Scottish organization is warning.
The Scottish Council on Human Bioethics, a professional group based in Edinburgh, has published a report on the ethical implications of the practice in the journal Human Reproduction and Genetic Ethics. The report is online at www.schb.org.uk.
“Crossing the human species barrier is a procedure that has always fascinated humanity,” noted the report, made public Tuesday and written in light of draft legislation on human embryology being prepared by the U.K. Department of Health, to be published this summer.
Ancient Greek mythology speaks of monsters such as the Minotaur—a man with a bull's head—and centaurs, mixtures of humans and horses.
But creatures of this nature may not remain confined to mythology for long, as scientists have begun tentatively creating mixed organisms. An array of experiments have produced animals with some human cells, for instance.
Such procedures “mix human and animal biological elements to such an extent that it questions the very concept of being entirely human,” the report said. This raises “grave and complex ethical difficulties.”
Some ethicists worry that the experiments might force society to make confounding decisions on whether, say, a human-chimp mix would have human rights. Other concerns are that such a creature could suffer from being outcast as a “monster,” from having a chimp as its biological father or mother, or from unusual health problems.
Some inter-species mixtures are powerful research tools, the report said.
This “became clear about a decade ago in a series of dramatic experiments in which small sections of brains from developing quails were taken and transplanted into the developing brains of chickens. The resulting chickens exhibited vocal trills and head bobs unique to quails, proving that the transplanted parts of the brain contained the neural circuitry for quail calls. It also offered astonishing proof that complex behaviours could be transferred across species.”
Later research has spawned human-animal creations, the report said. These usually die at the embryonic stage, but often survive if the mixtures involve only a few cells or genes transferred from one species to another.
The council cited the following examples:
In 2003, scientists at Cambridge University, U.K. conducted experiments involving fusing the nucleus of a human cell into frog eggs. The stated aim was to produce rejuvenated “master cells” that could be grown into replacement tissues for treating disease. It was not clear whether fertilization took place, but “some kind of development was initiated,” the report said.
In 2005, U.K. scientists transplanted a human chromosome into mouse embryos. The newly born mice carried copies of the chromosome and were able to pass it on to their own young.
The company Advanced Cell Technologies was reported, in 1999, to have created the first human embryo clone by inserting a human cell nucleus into a cow's egg stripped of chromosomes. The result was an embryo that developed and divided for 12 days before being destroyed.
Panayiotis Zavos, the operator of a U.S. fertility laboratory, reported in 2003 that he had created around 200 cow-human hybrid embryos that lived for about two weeks and grew to several hundred cells in size, beyond the stage at which cells showed the first signs of developing into tissues and organs.
In 2003, Hui Zhen Sheng of Shanghai Second Medical University, China, announced that rabbit-human embryos had been created by fusing human cells with rabbit eggs stripped of their chromosomes. The embryos developed to the approximately 100-cell stage that forms after about four days of development. The council made 16 recommendations, including that it should be illegal to mix animal and human sperm and eggs, or to create an embryo containing cells consisting of both human and animal chromosomes.
“The fertilisation of animal eggs with human sperm should not continue to be legal in the U.K. for research purposes,” said Calum MacKellar, the council's director of research.
“Most people are not aware that these kinds of experiments have been taking place in the U.K. and find it deeply offensive. Parliament should follow France and Germany and prohibit the creation of animal-human hybrid embryos.”
In a report published in 2004, the President's Council on Bioethics in the United States also advocated prohibiting the creation of animal-human embryos by uniting human and animal eggs and sperm. A draft law introduced in U.S. Congress by Senator Samuel Brownback (R-Kan.) would outlaw the creation of human-animal mixtures.
A 2005 report from the U.K. House of Commons Science and Technology Committee takes a more liberal stance, saying such embryos could be legal for research purposes if they are destroyed within 14 days.
“While there is revulsion in some quarters that such creations appear to blur the distinction between animals and humans, it could be argued that they are less human than, and therefore pose fewer ethical problems for research than fully human embryos,” the committee wrote.

Space Weapons and U.S. Ties

Russia Concerned About Space Weapons Deployment — Putin
Mos News November 9, 2006
President Vladimir Putin said Wednesday that Russia was concerned about foreign nations planning to deploy weapons in space and developing armaments he called destabilizing, The Associated Press News agency reports.
While Putin didn't name any country, his remarks appeared to reflect a growing strain in ties with the U.S.
“Some nations are trying to untie their hands to deploy weapons in space, including nuclear weapons,” Putin said in a speech to workers of the Defense Ministry's Main Intelligence Directorate, known under its Russian acronym, GRU, the ITAR-Tass, Interfax and RIA-Novosti news agencies reported.
Putin also voiced concern about the emergence of “destabilizing weapons, such as low-yield nuclear weapons and strategic missiles with non-nuclear warheads.”
Russian officials have previously criticized U.S. plans for fitting conventional warheads to some intercontinental ballistic missiles, saying that the launch of such a missile could provoke a full-scale counterattack using strategic nuclear forces.
Again naming no country in particular, Putin also criticized “illegitimate, unilateral actions by some powers, as well as attempts by some to unceremoniously hammer through their positions while fully ignoring legitimate interests of partners.”
Putin's criticism came amid a deepening chill in U.S.-Russian ties, strained over different approaches to global crises, such as the Iranian nuclear standoff and American criticism of the Kremlin's democracy record and strong-arming of ex-Soviet neighbors.

Natural chemical 'beats morphine'

The human body produces a natural painkiller several times more potent than morphine, research suggests.
When given to rats, the chemical, called opiorphin, was able to curb pain at much lower concentration than the powerful painkiller morphine.
The French team said their findings could be lead to new pain treatments.
But other scientists were unsure of the significance of the work, which is published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
The researchers isolated the chemical in human saliva, although they believe it may also be present in other parts of the body.
To study its pain-beating effects, they injected opiorphin into rats, who had either chemically-induced chronic pain or mechanically-induced acute pain.
The researchers found injections of one milligram per kilogram (mg/kg) of opiorphin could suppress the rats' pain to the same extent as injections of 6mg/kg of morphine, which is used to manage severe pain.
The researchers are not yet certain of the exact mechanism, but they believe opiorphin may be stopping enkephalins, chemicals found in the central nervous system that modify the body's response to pain, from being destroyed.
Possible mechanisms
The researchers now hope to identify the conditions that trigger the release of the chemical, and lead researcher Professor Catherine Rougeot, of the Institut Pasteur in Paris, France, said their findings could potentially lead to new treatments for treating pain.
But she cautioned: "First we need to explore the pharmacological profile of opiorphin and to study its toxicological effects."
John Wood, professor of molecular neurobiology, at University College London, said: "The discovery that human saliva contains a pain-killing protein is very interesting, and follows on from the discovery of related protein activities in rats and cows. These proteins all stop the breakdown of natural morphine-like proteins that block pain pathways in the brain.
"However, drugs that act in a similar way have not progressed to the clinic, and there is no strong evidence that these proteins play a role in the physiological control of pain perception. The significance of these findings for pain control is thus still uncertain."

Language Center of the Brain Is Not Under the Control of Subjects Who “Speak in Tongues”

Newswise — Glossolalia, otherwise referred to as “speaking in tongues,” has been around for thousands of years, and references to it can be found in the Old and New Testament. Speaking in tongues is an unusual mental state associated with specific religious traditions. The individual appears to be speaking in an incomprehensible language, yet perceives it to have great personal meaning. Now, in a first of its kind study, scientists are shining the light on this mysterious practice -- attempting to explain what actually happens physiologically to the brain of someone while speaking in tongues.
From a new brain imaging study at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, SPECT scans were taken of subjects while worshiping versus speaking in tongues. The speaking in tongue images primarily show a decrease of brain activity in the frontal lobes, which is what normally makes us feel as if we're in control. There was also a decrease in activity in the left basal ganglia, which is involved with focusing attention and emotional responses. Finally, the thalamus activity increased during speaking in tongues which supports it is an active state of the brain.
