A North scientist is spearheading a campaign against genetically modified ice cream with warnings that it could be a health "time bomb".
Prof Malcolm Hooper, from Sunderland University, is at the head of a campaign by the anti-GM group the Independent Science Panel over a protein being used in ice cream by the food giant Unilever.
The company is one of the world's largest ice cream manufacturers, making well known brands such as Wall's, Magnum and Carte D'Or.
But its attempt to use a protein derived from a polar fish to improve the taste and texture of its ice cream has been opposed by some scientists.
Prof Hooper said: "What concerns us is that this protein has not been fully validated for its possible long-term effects on the immunological system.
"Without long-term testing, we could be letting off an immunological time bomb."
The protein is already used in ice cream in the USA, and Uniliver has approval to do so in Chile, Indonesia, Mexico and the Philippines.
The company has also won a bid to use it in Australia and New Zealand, though only after objections by the health departments of the states of Victoria, Queensland and New South Wales and the New Zealand Food Safety Authority.
Nobody was available for comment at Unilever yesterday.
