Famous Work of Art Secrets to be Revealed

PARIS (Reuters) - Scientists are due to unveil some of the secrets behind Western art's most enigmatic smile this week, when they present the findings of the most extensive three dimensional scan ever undertaken on the Mona Lisa.
Leonardo da Vinci's 16th century masterpiece, perhaps the world's most famous painting, is considered a milestone in the art of portraiture and an icon of European culture.
A comprehensive examination of the work, painted at some time around 1503-06, was undertaken in 2004, using special 3D technology developed by scientists from Canada's National Research Council (NRC).
The scientists scanned the picture on both sides to obtain high resolution 3D image data of the whole painting which the NRC says will shed new light on the history and condition of the work, as well as on Leonardo da Vinci's technique.
The portrait itself will remain in the Louvre museum in Paris, where it has gazed inscrutably out at visitors since it was moved there after the French Revolution.
But the NRC, which will unveil its findings on Tuesday ahead of a public lecture in Ottawa, promises its model will allow both art history specialists and the general public to get closer than ever before without risking damage to the picture.

Weekend Storm Update

11 Mo. counties declared state of emergency after weekend storm damage.
With a dozen people dead from weekend flooding in the Midwest and South, residents were busy shoveling mud from homes and businesses that were inundated with water.
At least 8 deaths were reported in Kentucky after flooding triggered by 5 to 10 inches of rain sent rivers and creeks over their banks. Fifteen counties and four cities declared states of emergency, said Buddy Rogers of the Kentucky Division of Emergency Management.

The storms that hit parts of Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri and Tennessee on Friday and Saturday stranded people in cars, forced others from their homes and left thousands without power. In northern Arkansas, the search for a man who was swept away when the Spring River overflowed its banks was to resume Monday. Jackie Richardson, a retired firefighter, went missing Saturday at the River Bend Park campgrounds in Hardy where he spends his summers doing carpentry. Rescuers searched by foot and boat and with dogs but could not find him over the weekend.
With the floods, campers were stranded at the private campgrounds.
"People were hanging from trees," Hardy Fire Chief Lonnie Phelps said. "The river came up quick."
Arkansas rivers swelled up to 8 feet above flood levels, officials said. Campers at River Bend Park were asked to evacuate. The National Weather Service reported that areas of Kentucky received at least 5 inches of rain, with isolated regions getting close to 10 inches. Over 24 hours, parts of northeast Arkansas and southeast Missouri received more than 10 inches of rain, the weather service reported.
In central and eastern Missouri, nearly 400 structures were damaged or destroyed and at least 10 people were injured by about 10 tornadoes, officials said.

The Flouride Dangers Being Addressed

Fluoride will no longer be added to Del Rio’s drinking water. The Del Rio City Council made that decision Tuesday night after a presentation by John Morony, a retired college biology professor, who characterized fluoride as a poison and showed the council numerous research references that link fluoride to higher rates of cancer and other health hazards.
The paper stated, “Fluoride consumption by human beings increases the general cancer death rate.”Morony noted that although some fluoride occurs naturally in all water, the fluoride being added to the city’s water supply “is a waste product of the phosphate fertilizer industry.”Wrob then asked Lomas to give the council his opinion of adding fluoride to the city’s drinking water, a question Lomas did not answer directly.Mayor Efrain Valdez noted that the city spends about $20,000 a year buying the fluoride to add to the city water.Cole asked Lomas, “How do employees at the water plant feel about handling fluoride?”“It’s a very corrosive chemical. It eats through concrete and metal. When they handle it, they have to wear respirators and chemical-proof suits,” Lomas said.“But how do they feel about handling it?” Cole asked.“They really would rather not handle it,” Lomas replied.

Attack on Organic Farmers in order to take control.

Notice it is the Organic Farmer that is under attack here. How does milk and spinach get Ecoli....I believe it was purposely tainted.

First spinach and now tainted milk has infected people with E. coli bacteria, prompting a recall of some milk products, health officials said Friday. Those infected got sick after drinking unpasteurized milk produced by Organic Pastures, a Fresno County dairy, according to the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency.
The state has ordered all Organic Pastures whole and skim raw milk to be pulled immediately from stores and consumers were encouraged to throw away any of the milk in their refrigerators. The recall order also affects raw cream and raw colostrum made by the dairy. Organic Pastures has been prohibited from producing raw milk for the retail market until further notice, officials said.

Unfortunately Bad News Comes With The Good

Although severe weather has moved out of the Ozarks others were not as fortunate.

More Midwest storms are forecast; 7 dead
LOUISVILLE, Ky. - High winds, heavy rain and tornadoes pounded parts of the Midwest and the South, leaving at least seven people dead, stranding people in cars, forcing others from their homes, and leaving thousands without power.
The death toll in Kentucky on Saturday was at six, including a father and his 1-year-old daughter in a truck that skidded into floodwaters. In Arkansas, a woman whose boat was struck by lightning died and authorities were searching for two missing people.
Officials urged people to stay off the roads as forecasters warned of more stormy weather to come.
In central and eastern Missouri on Saturday, hundreds were without homes or power a day after a storm churned up about 10 tornadoes and drenched some parts of the state with as much as a foot of rain. Nearly 400 structures were damaged or destroyed and at least 10 people were injured, said Susie Stonner, a state emergency management spokeswoman.
In Arkansas, four northern counties declared emergencies Saturday after severe flooding. Two people were believed missing in Sharp County, hardest hit by the storms, although the sheriff's office would not confirm the number or provide further details about the daylong search.
Emily Taylor, a state emergency management spokeswoman, said a tornado touched down five miles outside Ash Flat, damaging 12 homes and destroying two others. Two people were taken to a hospital for minor injuries.
In Evansville, Ind., Vanderburgh County emergency management director Sherman Greer said his agency had given away about 550 sandbags in 90 minutes Saturday, many of them to residents of Evansville's southeast side who were dealing with flooding for the second time in two weeks.
Associated Press writers Jill Zeman in Little Rock, Ark., and Heather Hollingsworth in Kansas City, Mo., contributed to this report.

September 22nd Words From Indian Country

Five hundred and sixteen years ago, Christopher Columbus and his men "discovered" the New World. Within hours of that "discovery", Indigenous People began to die. Before all was said and done, millions upon millions of innocent men, women and children perished in the name of God and Greed.Yet we still celebrate Columbus' achievements - even in this day of enlightenment. This leads me to believe that there are two kinds of victims - those worthy to be mourned and those who merely became "cannon fodder" for the greater good. While we are encouraged to mourn those who died on 9/11, in what is said to be the most horrible act of terrorism on American soil, I can think of thousands of massacres and cruelties perpetrated against the Indigenous Peoples of this continent that make 911 pale in comparison. I will not honor Columbus and when November rolls around and Indians are in much demand to celebrate "Native American Month", I hope that all the "token Indians" who are asked to visit schools and talk about our culture and heritage will be brave enough to tell the real story. Even if it goes in one ear and out the other, this is the time of Balance and the truth will be told and even understood by some.In the spirit of Balance I ask that you remember:The 50,000 Native People who died within months of the establishment of the first Spanish colony on the island of Espanola. The soldiers held contests to see who could cut the most heads off with one blow. Women's breasts were cut off for sport while their babies were fed to the Mastiffs; The 24 million people who perished at the hands of the conquistadors in Central Mexico who held contests to see whose dogs could tear apart the most people. Babies were thrown into the air for the dogs to fight over; The 95% of the People in Western and Central Honduras who perished in less than 50 years; In Western Nicaragua the population fell from more than a million to less than 10,000 in only 60 years; In Peru, Chile and Brazil the population decreased from 14 million to 500,000 in less than a century. The soldiers, it was written, kept "the quarters of Indians hanging on porches to feed to the dogs." While many of the deaths were from diseases spread from the filth which permeated the "Old World" many of our People were simply worked to death. It was cheaper to work the slaves until they died than to feed them. There were always more slaves to be had. These are but a few of the atrocities that led to the development of The New World. Were they unworthy victims? You decide.<><><><><><><><><><><><><><>Bibliography"Genocide In the Americas" by David E. Stannard

Now organic milk is about to become much more widely available, as Wal-Mart rolls out its own organic brand, which will be cheaper than similar milk on the market. But critics worry that what consumers will be getting is a diluted form of organic milk.
Wal-Mart’s own organic milk is likely to create stiff competition for many other makers of organic milk — which comes from cows that have not been treated with hormones or antibiotics — and even sellers of conventional milk.
The organic milk Wal-Mart is selling under its own label comes from Aurora Organic Dairy, which also supplies Safeway, Costco, Target and Wild Oats with their store brands of organic milk. But Wal-Mart’s entry into the market stirs greater attention from critics.
Activist groups, as well as some organic food retailers and dairies, contend that the company where Wal-Mart and the other big retailers get their milk operates large factory farms that are diluting the principles of organic agriculture and delivering customers a substandard product. They argue that Aurora’s cows do not spend any significant time roaming pastures and eating fresh grass; instead they live on a diet high in grains.
“They are trying to cut corners in the interest of producing milk as cheaply as possible,” said Mark Kastel, senior farm analyst at the Cornucopia Institute, which represents organic family farmers.

Finding from the Edge

Sept. 21, 2006: Almost every day, the great antennas of NASA's Deep Space Network turn to a blank patch of sky in the constellation Ophiuchus. Pointing at nothing, or so it seems, they invariably pick up a signal, faint but full of intelligence. The source is beyond Neptune, beyond Pluto, on the verge of the stars themselves.
It's Voyager 1. The spacecraft left Earth in 1977 on a mission to visit Jupiter and Saturn. Almost 30 years later, with the gas giants long ago seen and done, Voyager 1 is still going and encountering some strange things.

New Ring of Saturn

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Saturn has a newly discovered ring, a faint trail of particles just visible in between some of its better-known rings,
NASA said on Tuesday. The orbiting Cassini spacecraft caught sight of the ring and other rare features when the sun passed directly behind Saturn in what is known as an occultation, providing bright backlight to the rings.
Cameras aboard Cassini also caught images of wispy fingers of icy material stretching out tens of thousands of kilometers (miles) from Enceladus, another confirmation that the moon is spraying material that may be making up Saturn's outer E-ring.
Saturn has at least 47 known moons and at least seven rings. The joint U.S.-European Space Agency Cassini mission, launched in 1997, is spending four years examining Saturn.
The new ring can be barely seen outside the brighter main rings of Saturn and inside the G and E rings. It coincides with the orbits of Saturn's moons Janus and Epimetheus, and NASA researchers said that meteoroid impacts on those moons may have kicked off particles that coalesced into the ring.

Numbers and Language

SNIP:

The one thing I recalled vividly was his discovery of that number embedded within a word which now struck me as incredibly relevant. The word was “enlightenment”. He highlighted the hidden word “eighteen” by using capital letters: E-nl-IGHTE-nm-EN-t. It was only now, at this particularly enlightening moment, that I realized the distilled value of 18 is 9. I guess it shouldn't have come as any surprise that one could find God embedded in enlightenment. It was all very clever, I thought, but what was the bottom line here? How did it tie together? How could God and Change be related? After all, hadn't we always been taught that God was unchanging, the same then as now and forever more, amen? Maybe, I thought, the word “change” wasn't quite the right word. The connotation was wrong. “Transition” was more like it. In the endless series of numbers, 9 is always the transitional number, the point where one segment ends and the next begins. EnlIGHTEnmENt isn't a thing , it's a process, a never ending spiral. Everytime you reach the transition point of 9 along the journey, you start all over again, only at the next higher level. Now, presumably, the idea would be the eventual attainment of Perfection, of Oneness with God. But if the process is a never-ending one, then what's the point? The point is this. The process is never ending because God is never ending. The process is God. In terms of the numbers, when you total all of the individual numbers 1 through 9 you get 45 which, when distilled, equals 9. In order to actually complete the circle, you must reconnect at 1. But that completion can never be made because the 1 you reach is not the same 1 from which you have just come. It is the beginning of the next level, the next series of 9. God is forever unfolding. God is transition. God is 9.

Mystery objects seen near Shuttle Atlantis

Shuttle astronauts spotted three more pieces of debris floating in space outside Atlantis early Wednesday, but officials said it didn't seem their appearance would prevent a landing attempt Thursday.
The objects were sighted during stepped-up inspections a day after the discovery of two other mysterious objects forced a postponement of the planned Wednesday landing.
The first object sighted Tuesday morning appeared to drift away when landing systems were put through a normal but bumpy trial run.
But after being unable to determine what the object was Tuesday, NASA managers opted to spend early Wednesday making sure the shuttle was in good shape instead of concentrating on solving the mystery.

Disease killing off lions in India

NEW DELHI (AP) -- Nearly two dozen crossbred lions are slowly dying in northern India from a mysterious disease afflicting the hybrid offspring of Asiatic and African cats paired in a discontinued experimental program.
Zookeepers are mournfully watching the results of the program, which began in the late 1980s at the Chhatbir Zoo and was ended in 2002 after many of the nearly 80 crossbred lions were struck by a mysterious disease linked to inbreeding and a weakened gene pool, said Kuldip Kumar, Punjab state's conservator of forests and wildlife.

Over 330 Shanghai residents have been poisoned by pork tainted with a weight-loss steroid popular among bodybuilders.
Clenbuterol, a product normally marketed to fitness fanatics, was used by farmers in east China to produce leaner pork meat, the China Daily reported.
As a result, a total of 336 people have been poisoned in Shanghai since September 13, in the city's largest clenbuterol poisoning case, the paper said.
The chemical can reportedly cause damage to the human nervous and cardiovascular system. However, all those affected in Shanghai have been released from hospital, the paper said.
Most of the pigs have been traced to neighboring Zhejiang where rearing pigs on clenbuterol, known locally as "lean meat powder", is widespread, the paper said.
The government banned the use of the chemical in the 1990s, it added.
According to the report, many farmers stop feeding the pigs with the drug several weeks before they are slaughtered, making detection difficult for food inspectors.
Shanghai officials downplayed the scare, saying it is unlikely that more contaminated pigs are in city markets, the China Daily said.
Clenbuterol is a medication that has been used to treat bronchial diseases such as asthma, but is largely used by bodybuilders or as a weight-loss supplement for the overweight.
It is banned by the World Anti-Doping Agency, which oversees doping in sports.

FDA's Problem Reaction Solution

E. coli cases prompt calls to regulate farm practices -- Even as investigators track the source of tainted spinach, consumer groups seek more FDA authority over farms. We KNEW that was coming!! "Even after processing and washing, sorting and quality searching, it is still possible for just a few cells to survive," says Luke LaBorde, associate professor of food science at Pennsylvania State University.
"It might be that the FDA now sees it is time to come up with new standards for the farm," he says. But enforcement would be difficult, he acknowledges.
"The FDA regulatory authority begins with processing, which is industrial and is a whole different ball of wax," says Dr. LaBorde. "But growing is not covered under the laws and regulations. Given our manpower, how could it be done given the wide distribution of farms?"

Believe me I'm sure they already have a plan of action to conrol the local farms.....stay tuned!!!

Summer Snow

The Salt Lake Valley got a chilly reminder this weekend that summer doesn't last forever. The first snowflakes of the season stuck to the mountainsides and swirled about the valley Saturday as a cold front marched through Utah with temperatures dropping below 40 degrees overnight along the Wasatch Front. Snow piled up 6 inches deep at Snowbird ski resort and dusted communities north of Salt Lake City. It whipped through Price canyon to the south, slowing traffic along U.S. Highway 6 and softening the autumn hues. The National Weather Service reported the heaviest snowfall above 7,000 feet. Lower elevations were greeted with rain, snow flurries and even quarter-sized hail. The agency expects temperatures to drop below freezing overnight in some places along the Wasatch Front.

Thought from Hidden Meanings

A Thought
THE GREAT TIME OF HEALING HAS BEGUN
Back in 2000 I presented a report to you which was published in New Yorker Magazine. In fact it was in February 2000. The report was from Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute.
The headline read as follows.
“We will be seeing a global cure for cancer in 5 to 10 years”.
That was in 2000 , this is 2006.
In 2000 Dr. Dennis Slamon UCLA Johnson Cancer Center made a startling and very promising statement, he said

“The day when we can do away with chemo is not far off. It can mean the end of disease as we know it”.

AUGUST 31 2006
The National Cancer Institute reports Scientists for the first time have genetically modified tumor-fighting immune cells, allowing patients to rid themselves of an aggressive form of cancer, according to a study released Thursday.

The technique, used to cure two terminal patients with advanced melanoma, paves the way for a new approach to fighting cancer by harnessing — and boosting — the body's own immune system instead of relying on toxic chemotherapy and radiation treatments to kill out-of-control tumors.
The scientific prophecies of 6 years ago are being fulfilled. For the first time, 2 people have been cured of cancer.

Not just two patients with moderate cancer.
These were terminal patients with melanoma, probably the most rapidly spreading form of cancer. Keep in mind that these people had cancer throughout their body yet the new cells sought out the cancer cells and destroyed them.

NEXT WILL BEGIN THE HEALING OF THE MIND
TO STOP ALL OF THIS VIOLENT LUNACY THAT IS PERMEATING THE PLANET EARTH
THE POWER TAKEN AWAY FROM WORLD LEADERS WHO THRIVE ON WAR AND FEAR
THE POWER GIVEN TO WORLD LEADERS WHO THRIVE ON HEALING AND PEACE

The light is descending now and has touched earth.
First comes the physical change as we see in this report and now we will see the mental change.

The 7th Angel has cast the power down upon the earth.

Nearby Surprise, Nebraska felt the worst of Friday's damage though, as a tornado ripped through grain bins and homes in the town of 44.
"They just said, 'mobile home was destroyed in Surprise,' and I knew right away it was ours because ours is the only mobile home here," said Surprise resident Rose Primus.
But Rose's mobile home, which she says looks like it exploded from the inside out, was not the only home ruined in Surprise.
Many residents are helpless, as they sit and stare in disbelief while their belongings are hauled away and piled up in nearby yards.
The sounds of chainsaws and clean-up crews continue moving through Surprise, but Dave Williams says the noise cannot compare to what woke him Friday night.
"Glass was breaking, windows were being blown out. I knocked over the tower that holds our siren, so there was no siren, there was no warning," Williams said.
Williams found his camper trailers destroyed and the roof of his pub in the street.
A complete estimate of Friday night's damage is not yet known, and it is possible that Saturday's severe weather could add to the tally.

Recall Update

Even if you wash the spinach, you still could be at risk. Sober warnings for salad lovers came from federal health officials Friday as they struggled to pinpoint a multistate E. coli outbreak that killed one person and sickened nearly 100 more.
By Friday, the outbreak had grown to include at least 20 states: California, Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The bug has sickened at least 94 people across the nation, the CDC said. The agency added that 29 people have been hospitalized, 14 of them with kidney failure. Local doctors began seeing the first of the ongoing E. coli poisoning cases in late August. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Wisconsin health officials alerted the FDA about the outbreak at midweek.
When ingested, the bug can cause diarrhea, often with bloody stools. Most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, although some people _ including the very young and old _ can develop a form of kidney failure that often leads to death.
Anyone who has gotten sick after eating raw packaged spinach should contact a doctor, officials said. Other bagged vegetables, including prepackaged salads, apparently are not affected.
"At this point, we are focused on the issue of the spinach. As we learn more, as we go further, we will alter or change that recommendation," von Eschenbach said.

Fireball streaks across southern skies Sept. 13th

Flashing across the sky at speeds of 40,000kmh, a meteor in "terminal fireball" has sent a sonic shockwave across the South Island.
The sonic boom from the meteor speeding through the Earth's atmosphere at 2.55pm yesterday was heard by people from Hinds, south of Ashburton, to Blenheim.
The boom caused buildings to shake and windows to break, and prompted a flood of calls to emergency services.
Scientists say it is unlikely anything will be found of the meteor, which was probably no bigger than a basketball.
Mount John Observatory resident superintendent Alan Gilmore said evidence pointed to the meteor exploding in a "terminal fireball" as it got closer to land.
"We did hear reports of a woman saying she saw a bright white light, followed by colours, but that would have been it going `poof' into a luminous cloud," he said.
The noise indicated it was travelling faster than sound, possibly over 40,000kmh, slowing when it hit the Earth's thicker air.
Gilmore said it was unusual to see a meteor during the day, with the last reported daytime sighting in the North Island six years ago.
University of Canterbury astronomist Professor John Hearnshaw said it was "moderately rare" for a meteor to burn up in the atmosphere and be found on the ground.
The meteor most likely exploded as it hit denser air in the upper troposphere – the lowest layer of the Earth's atmosphere – or in the stratosphere above that at an altitude of between 12km and 50km above sea level, he said.
People from across the South Island were stunned by the meteor's flaming progress and sonic boom.

Sept. 15th Words From Indian Country

Miracle's Second Chance Brings Renewed HopeOn August 25, 2006, a rare white buffalo calf was born on the Dave Heider farm near Janesville, Wisconsin. The odds are about a million to one that a buffalo will be born white, yet this is the third white buffalo that has chosen to come to the Heiders. In 1994, the white buffalo named Miracle was born there. Tens of thousands of people flocked to the Heider Farm to pay homage to the Sacred Buffalo who many believed fulfilled the Brule Sioux prophesy of White Buffalo Calf Woman.According to Crow Dog, a Medicine Man, "This Holy Woman brought the Sacred Buffalo Calf Pipe to the Sioux. There could be no Indians without it. Before she came, people didn't know how to live. They knew nothing. The Buffalo Woman put her sacred mind into their minds." As she left, she promised to return again to help the People.Miracle's death in 2004 caused many to wonder if she was indeed the fulfillment of the prophesy. But if you think about it, didn't most prophets throughout history appear, deliver their message and then go back, leaving behind a promise to return before the end of days?A second white calf was born in 1996 but lived only a few days. After Miracle died, the Heiders went back to their ordinary lives, shut down the gift shop and plowed up the parking lots. But the birth of this buffalo, named Miracle's Second Chance, will probably change their plans. Mr. Heider found the baby after a severe thunderstorm hit the area. Second Chance's mother was recently purchased from a Missouri farm and his father was a 10 month old bull buffalo who was very unruly and considered dangerous. Heider had him butchered before the birth of the new white calf. Two more buffalo cows were bred to him. There are quite a few white buffalos in the world right now, but some of them are albinos while many others are a cross between a buffalo and a Charolais which often results in a white animal. According to the prophecy, the true white buffalo will begin life as white, then the coat will change to represent each of the other colors of man; yellow, red and black before returning to brown. Miracle fulfilled that promise. Perhaps Miracle's Second Chance will help more People find their way back to the Good Red Road and the promise that lies there.<><><><><><><><><><><><><><>Susan B

Rainbows in sky and water

The following two stories of a contrail and dust on a pond forming rainbows....Looks like something far worse than this going on but believe it if you wish.

MISSILE PATTERNS: Here's something else that's not a rainbow. Alfredo Garcia Jr. photographed the display from Tucson, Arizona, on Wednesday morning, Sept. 13th:
"There was a THAAD missile test conducted at White Sands Missile Range in New Mexico. We could see the missile's trail glowing in the early morning sky all the way from Tucson," he says.
Actually, the test was a failure. One missile was supposed to intercept and destroy another--but the target missile failed to launch properly. The frustrated destroyer left an icy contrail that caught the rays of the morning sun, producing these iridescent colors.
"These colored bands are not a rainbow," explains atmospheric optics expert Les Cowley. "They are an effect not in the books called 'Quételét Patterns.' Pollen grains dusting a lake stay dry and ride just above the water surface. They scatter light rays that interfere with other rays reflected from the water to make a colored pattern.

Darpa's Grand Challenge may have looked tough, but it was a piece of cake compared to the challenge facing robots currently being developed by the U.S. Air Force.
Self-learning and adaptability will be the key to success, and this is where the Creativity Machine excels. Give it any set of robotic limbs and it will master locomotion within minutes without any programming, swiftly finding the most efficient way of moving toward a goal. It will spontaneously develop new gaits for new challenges. (Thaler recounts how a virtual robotic cockroach adopted a two-legged gait and ran on its hind legs, not unlike basilisk lizards, when it needed to move faster.)
Perhaps the most impressive -- and spookiest -- aspect of the project is the swarming behavior of the robots. In computer simulations, they acted together to tackle obstacles and grouped together into defensive formations where needed, Thaler said. They also worked out how to deal with defenders, and spontaneously devised the most efficient strategy for mapping their environment, he added.
The AFRL says it has no immediate plans to build robot hardware, and the current program is concerned only with software. However, a trawl of Pentagon budget documents turns up a number of hardware projects. One, by the Defense Threat Reduction Agency, which is tasked with dealing with WMD threats, commences in fiscal year 2007 for "technology necessary for robotic systems to attack tunnel complexes" and another for "microdamage technologies" for "very small robotic weapons."
The first market for Creative Robots will be the military, but given how easily this software can be transferred to other hardware, it could find civilian uses. If made available for commercial and industrial use, CSMARRT could potentially turn any robot into part of a versatile swarm intelligence capable of learning and carrying out complex physical tasks.

Mayan in the News

TEGUCIGALPA, Honduras (Reuters) - Experts are examining the ruins of a pre-Columbian culture in an area of Honduras where there had been no previous evidence of major indigenous civilization.
The site, discovered earlier this year, consists of 14 mounds that form part of what are believed to be ceremonial grounds, the Honduran Institute of Anthropology said.
"They are part of a very important site, a governing center of a pre-Columbian civilization," Oscar Neils, the institute's head of research, told Reuters. "We had no idea that there was a pre-Columbian culture in this area."Honduras is home to some 14,000 archeological sites, including world-famous Copan, which flourished between the fifth and ninth centuries and was one of the first Mayan sites to be excavated.
This site is completely distinct, Neils said.
"Its culture is an enigma," added the Mexican archeologist.

Birth of the White Buffalo

A farm in Wisconsin is quickly becoming hallowed ground for American Indians with the birth of its third white buffalo, an animal considered sacred by many tribes for its potential to bring good fortune and peace.
"We took one look at it and I can't repeat what I thought but I thought, 'Here we go again,'" said owner Dave Heider.
Thousands of people stopped by Heider's Janesville farm after the birth of the first white buffalo, a female named Miracle who died in 2004 at the age of 10. The second was born in 1996 but died after three days.
Heider said he discovered the third white buffalo, a newborn male, after a storm in late August.
Over the weekend, about 50 American Indians held a drum ceremony to honor the calf, which has yet to be named, he said.
Floyd "Looks for Buffalo" Hand, a medicine man in the Oglala Sioux Tribe in Pine Ridge, S.D., said it was fate that the white buffaloes chose one farm, which will likely become a focal point for visitors, who make offerings such as tobacco and dream catchers in the hopes of earning good fortune and peace.
"That's destiny," he said. "The message was only choose one person."
The white buffalo is particularly sacred to the Cheyenne, Sioux and other nomadic tribes of the Northern Plains that once relied on the buffalo for subsistence.
According to a version of the legend, a white buffalo, disguised as a woman wearing white hides, appeared to two men. One treated her with respect, and the other didn't. She turned the disrespectful man into a pile of bones, and gave the respectful one a pipe and taught his people rituals and music. She transformed into a female white buffalo calf and promised to return again.
That this latest birth is a male doesn't make it any less significant in American Indian prophecies, which say that such an animal will reunite all the races of man and restore balance to the world, Hand said. He said the buffalo's coat will change from white to black, red and yellow, the colors of the various races of man, before turning brown again.
The birth of a white male buffalo means men need to take responsibility for their families and the future of the tribe, Hand said.
The odds of a white buffalo are at least 1 in a million, said Jim Matheson, assistant director of the National Bison Association. Buffalo in general have been rare for years, thought their numbers are increasing, with some 250,000 now in the U.S., he said.
Many people, like Heider, choose to raise the animals for their meat, which is considered a healthier, low-fat alternative to beef.
Gary Adamson, 65, of Elkhorn, who is of Choctaw and Cherokee heritage, said tribal elders will help interpret the animal's significance.
"There are still things that need to be done, and Miracle's task wasn't quite done yet, and we feel there's something there," he said.

Weapons of the Insane

Nonlethal weapons such as high-power microwave devices should be used on American citizens in crowd-control situations before being used on the battlefield, the Air Force secretary said Tuesday.
The object is basically public relations. Domestic use would make it easier to avoid questions from others about possible safety considerations, said Secretary Michael Wynne.
"If we're not willing to use it here against our fellow citizens, then we should not be willing to use it in a wartime situation," said Wynne. "(Because) if I hit somebody with a nonlethal weapon and they claim that it injured them in a way that was not intended, I think that I would be vilified in the world press."
The Air Force has paid for research into nonlethal weapons, but he said the service is unlikely to spend more money on development until injury problems are reviewed by medical experts and resolved.
Nonlethal weapons generally can weaken people if they are hit with the beam. Some of the weapons can emit short, intense energy pulses that also can be effective in disabling some electronic devices.
On another subject, Wynne said he expects to choose a new contractor for the next generation aerial refueling tankers by next summer. He said a draft request for bids will be put out next month, and there are two qualified bidders: the Boeing Co. and a team of Northrop Grumman Corp. and European Aeronautic Defence and Space Co., the majority owner of European jet maker Airbus SAS.
The contract is expected to be worth at least $20 billion (€15.75 billion).
Chicago, Illinois-based Boeing lost the tanker deal in 2004 amid revelations that it had hired a top Air Force acquisitions official who had given the company preferential treatment.
Wynne also said the Air Force, which is already chopping 40,000 active duty, civilian and reserves jobs, is now struggling to find new ways to slash about $1.8 billion (€1.4 billion) from its budget to cover costs from the latest round of base closings.
He said he can't cut more people, and it would not be wise to take funding from military programs that are needed to protect the country. But he said he also incurs resistance when he tries to save money on operations and maintenance by retiring aging aircraft.
"We're finding out that those are, unfortunately, prized possessions of some congressional districts," said Wynne, adding that the Air Force will have to "take some appetite suppressant pills." He said he has asked employees to look for efficiencies in their offices.
The base closings initially were expected to create savings by reducing Air Force infrastructure by 24 percent.

Antidepresent Linked to Violence and Suicide

A type of antidepressant, already suspected of raising the risk of suicide, may also cause a few people to become violent. Researchers reported on Monday that people who took GlaxoSmithKline's antidepressant Paxil were twice as likely to have what was called a "hostility event" as those given a placebo. Paxil is in a class of drugs called selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors, or SSRIs.They came under scrutiny when some doctors reported that teenagers on the drugs might be more likely to commit suicide. In 2004, the US Food and Drug Administration ordered strong label warnings on several SSRI drugs. British researchers used several sources of information to see what the risk of violent behaviour was among people taking SSRIs. They found that 60 out of 9 219 people who took Paxil, or 0,65 percent, had "a hostility event," compared to 20 of 6 455 given a placebo, or 0,31 percent. The researchers said, however, that such violence was likely to be rare. - Reuters

September 14th Health Alert

An outbreak of
E. coli' in eight states has left at least one person dead and 50 others sick, federal health officials said Thursday in warning consumers nationwide not to eat bagged fresh spinach.
The death occurred in Wisconsin, where 20 people were made ill, state officials said. The outbreak has sickened others — eight of them seriously — in Connecticut, Idaho, Indiana, Michigan, New Mexico, Oregon and Utah, according to federal health officials.
In California, state health officials were investigating a possible case that could be linked to the outbreak and warned consumers not to eat the produce.
FDA officials do not know the source of the outbreak other than it appears to be linked to bagged fresh spinach. "We're advising people not to eat it," said Dr. David Acheson of the
Food and Drug Administration Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition.
The outbreak has affected a mix of ages, but most of the cases have involved women, Acheson told reporters in a conference call. He had no further information on the person who died.
The five confirmed patients in Oregon were females who ranged in age from 8 to 62, said Dr. Bill Keene, an epidemiologist with the Oregon Department of Human Services. The cases originated between Aug. 25 and Sept. 1, he said, and were linked to the spinach but not to a specific brand.
"People have either varying or no recollection of the brand they purchased," Keene said.
In Michigan, two adults and a child were sickened, a state health official said. Connecticut reported one case.
"We're telling people if they have bagged produce and they feel like it's a risk, throw it out," Michigan Department of Community Health spokesman T.J. Bucholz said. "If they feel like they have to eat it, wash it first in warm water."
The Idaho Department of Health and Welfare was advising people to exercise caution as it tried to gather more information, spokesman Ross Mason said.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Wisconsin health officials alerted the FDA about the outbreak Wednesday. Preliminary analysis suggests the same bug is responsible for the outbreak in all eight states.
The warning applied to consumers nationwide because of uncertainty over the origin of the tainted spinach and how widely it was distributed.
Health officials do not know of any link to a specific growing region, grower, brand or supplier, Acheson said.
He said reports of infections have been growing.
"It's increasing by the day," Acheson said. "We may be at the peak, we may not be."
Amy Philpott, a spokeswoman for the United Fresh Produce Association, said that it's possible the cause of the outbreak won't be known for some time, even after its source is determined.
"Our industry is very concerned," she said. "We're taking this very seriously."
E. coli causes diarrhea, often with bloody stools. Most healthy adults can recover completely within a week, although some people — including the very young and old — can develop a form of kidney failure that often leads to death.
Anyone who has gotten sick after eating raw packaged spinach should contact a doctor, officials said.
Other bagged vegetables, including prepackaged salads, apparently are not affected. In general, however, washing all bagged vegetables is recommended.
E. coli lives in the intestines of cattle and other animals and typically is linked to contamination by fecal material. It causes an estimated 73,000 cases of infection, including 61 deaths, each year in the United States, according to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Sources of the bacterium include uncooked produce, raw milk, unpasteurized juice, contaminated water and meat, especially undercooked or raw hamburger, the agency says on its Web site.
In December 2005, an E. coli outbreak sickened at least eight children in Washington state. Officials traced the outbreak to unpasteurized milk from a dairy that had been ordered to stop distributing raw milk.
Last October, the FDA warned people not to eat certain Dole prepackaged salads that were connected to an outbreak of E. coli infections in Minnesota. At least 11 people were sickened.
In 1993, a major E. coli outbreak sickened about 700 people and killed four who ate undercooked Jack in the Box hamburgers in Washington state. That outbreak led to tighter Agriculture Department safety standards for meat and poultry producers.

We're All Connected

Space weather in the upper reaches of the atmosphere is affected by weather conditions down here on Earth, a new study suggests.

Using a combination of satellite imagery and computer simulations, researchers found that tides of air created by intense thunderstorms over South America, Africa and Southeast Asia are altering the structure of the ionosphere, the topmost layers of the atmosphere where space weather occurs.

The finding, detailed in the Aug. 11 issue of Geophysical Research Letters, is surprising because scientists didn't think the ionosphere and the troposphere—the lower part of the atmosphere where terrestrial weather happens—affected one another.

"This discovery will help improve forecasts of turbulence in the ionosphere, which can disrupt radio transmissions and the reception of signals from the Global Positioning Satellite," said study leader Thomas Immel of the University of California, Berkeley.

In those days, large asteroids such as Hygea, Ceres and Vesta were widely deemed planets. They appeared so in textbooks and scientific journals. Adding asteroids to the other known planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, gave a grand total of 18. Imagine the pneumonic: "My Very Educated [insert ten adjectives here] Mother Just Served Us Noodles."
The asteroids were eventually demoted. It was a long, drawn-out affair, marked by decades of disagreement and confusion. (Sound familiar?) By 1900, however, order was restored to the Solar System: the planet count was down to eight.
And then came Pluto...

Science becomes invisible

After years of work, David Schurig and David R. Smith at Duke University will finish their research and have absolutely nothing to show for it: They're making a cloak of invisibility.
Really.
So unusual is this undertaking for a serious academic electrical engineering team that Smith has created an elaborate Web site discussing the dream of invisibility as viewed in science fiction--Harry Potter and the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft are mentioned--and relating such ideas to scientific fact.
In theory, Smith said, it's possible to make light follow curved lines that skirt an object rather than illuminate it. Light "circulates around the void--like water flowing past a rock in a stream," Smith explained.
This would create a void in space--a place that is invisible.
Natural materials would not do the trick, but Duke researchers are designing artificial substances, called metamaterials, that are engineered to be invisible. They use technology for making circuit boards and computer chips to create metamaterials.
"We're building stuff in the microwave range, using fairly standard lithography," said Schurig.
The metamaterials under construction should render an object invisible to radar, although people could still see it, said Schurig. The Duke team's goal is to have a working example sometime next year. It would demonstrate that invisibility cloaks can work.
The project has evoked interest from military people who like the idea of cloaking spy satellites so they are invisible to radar, among other things. The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency is financing the research.
Making a cloak to render stuff invisible to the human eye will be more difficult, requiring nanotechnology fabrication and some very clever design work, Schurig said.
"Many people have this fantasy of being invisible," he said. "It's not clear what the commercial benefits might be, but the idea has really sparked a lot of interest."

Great Balls of Fire

Mysterious light not so mysterious after all
SEATTLE – Around 7:30 p.m. Monday, KING 5 News' phones started to ring as viewers reported seeing a ball of flames shooting across the skies of Western Washington.
The calls came in mostly from Pierce and Kitsap counties.
Michael Wittig and his wife were out barbecuing when they saw something streaking through the sky. They kept rolling as the fiery tail grew behind the mystery object.
"It was pretty bright, and it was pretty big, and at one point it looked like it was getting more intense. It was a faded orange, then it got quite a bit brighter as it turned the corner," he said.
People not only called KING, they called the Federal Aviation Administration. While it looked very strange, it is actually very common.
The FAA said the light was a high-altitude jet that was leaving a contrail behind it. The sun was at just the right angle before sunset to reflect off the jet and create the illusion of smoke and fire.

Food for Thought Sept. 11th

10 THINGS FOOD COMPANIES DON'T WANT YOU TO KNOW

The giant food corporations have one mission: selling more food and beverage products to consumers. Succeeding with that mission depends on keeping consumers in the dark on certain issues such as the presence cancer-causing chemicals found in popular food products.

Here are ten things the food corporations, whose products dominate grocery store shelves across the United States and other countries, absolutely do not want you to know.

1. The ingredients listed on the label aren't the only things in the food. Cancer-causing chemicals such as acrylamides may be formed in the food during high-heat processing, yet there's no requirement to list them on the label. Residues of solvents, pesticides and other chemicals may also be present, but also do not have to be listed. The National Uniformity for Food Act, currently being debated in the U.S. Congress, would make it illegal (yes, illegal) for states to require cancer warnings on foods that contain cancer-causing chemicals (such as California's Proposition 65.) See articles on the Food Uniformity Act.

2. Monosodium glutamate (MSG), which is added to thousands of food and grocery products through a dozen different innocent-sounding ingredients, imbalances endocrine system function, disabling normal appetite regulation and causing consumers to keep eating more food. This chemical not only contributes to nationwide obesity, it also helps food companies boost repeat business. See articles on MSG.

3. MSG is routinely hidden in foods in these ingredients: yeast extract, torula yeast, hydrolyzed vegetable protein and autolyzed yeast. Thousands of common grocery products contain one or more of these chemical taste enhancers, including nearly all "vegetarian" foods such as veggie burgers (read labels to check). See Food manufacturers hide dangerous ingredients in everyday foods by using confusing terms on the label.

4. ADHD in children is caused almost entirely by the consumption of processed food ingredients such as artificial colors and refined carbohydrates. Eighty percent of so-called ADHD children who are taken off processed foods are cured of ADHD in two weeks. See articles on ADHD.

5. The chemical sweetener aspartame, when exposed to warm temperatures for only a few hours, begins to break down into chemicals like formaldehyde and formic acid. Formaldehyde is a potent nerve toxin and causes damage to the eyes, brain and entire nervous system. Aspartame has been strongly linked to migraines, seizures, blurred vision and many other nervous system problems. See articles on aspartame.

THERE IS NO "SAFETY NET" FOR THE MAJORITY OF AMERICANS
From the Declaration of Independence, where it relates "life" as an inalienable right, it is clear that the founders of the United States of America had a different understanding of the purpose of government than what some Americans, mostly far right politically, have in modern times. At the beginning of the U.S.A. most citizens would have farms or gardens to enable growing their food. However, in the event of a national emergency where there wasn't food or access to food, such as war, weather catastrophe, shortage of jobs, and such the founders of the U.S.A. intended that Americans not go without food. To have life it is required to have adequate air, water, and food.

THE COMING STARVATION IN AMERICA

The government of the United States, by Law was to always maintain a three year mixed-grain survival storage for every man, woman, and child in the United States.

Like most Laws of the land, the politicians never took heed as to why our wise ancestors had this reserve requirement established. It was to make sure, that, in the time of a National Emergency, the people had the most important mainstay needed for survival individually and as a Nation.

Remember, the people make the Nation, the Nation does not make the people.

In the 1960's and 1970's the different political administrations of Washington, D.C. walked away from sanity and started to give the surplus grains which where in elevator storage all over the country, to other nations, such as the Soviet Union, India, etc... This continued over two decades, until the elevators were empty and the reserve of grains that were in reserve as per a national crisis....were gone.

-SNIP-

By 1996, the United States Department of Agriculture (U.S.D.A.) claimed that there was enough food in ware-house storage to last every man, woman and child in the cities a 3 day supply and a 5 day supply for every man, woman, and child in the countryside, should a great national emergency occur. In other words, if food trucks stopped running, the food supplies for the masses would be 3 days in the cities and 5 days in the countryside.

The Fairies are Back

A large fairy circle has appeared in the lawn of Tom and Sue Gaylard's home in School Lane. Mrs Gaylard, 85, said: "It amazed me. I had never heard of it or seen anything like it before and I couldn't believe it."
The perfect ring of mushrooms, know as a fairy or pixie circle, first appeared about three years ago and has re-appeared annually, each time getting bigger.
Mr Gaylard, an 85-year-old retired railway worker, has lived in Staverton with his wife for more than 20 years.
continued...

He said: "We don't believe in fairies of course but it is known as that. We didn't really pay much attention to it but then our daughter-in-law saw it and ran out to make a wish in it."
In times gone past the rings, some of which are hundreds of years old, defied explanation spawning a host of legends in countries around the world to explain their presence.
In English folklore the rings were said to be caused by fairies dancing in a circle, wearing down the grass beneath their feet. Toads would then sit on the worn down areas, poisoning it and allowing the fungus to grow - hence the name toadstool.
In Sussex, fairy rings were called hag tracks', while in Devon it was believed that fairies would catch young horses in the night and ride them round in circles.
In Denmark elves have been traditionally blamed for the rings while in parts of Austria they were thought to be the result of land being scorched by the breath of dragons.
The rings are in fact naturally occurring circles of fungi that can grow up to 10 metres in diameter. They are caused by fungi under the ground casting out spores in a circular pattern resulting in the distinctive ring.
In some cases the fungi remain underground and the ring is marked by discoloured patches of grass.
The circles, which can appear anywhere, can be formed by an estimated 50 different species of mushrooms and toadstools.
Most cultures regard the rings as lucky, with their benefits as diverse as granting wishes to improve your looks.
Although their true origins have been known since the 18th century the circles are still regarded as a fascinating phenomenon of the natural world.

Pyramids Discovered in Ukraine

Ukraine may be thousands of miles away from Egypt, but archaeologists there say they have found pyramids.
It is claimed that the monuments have been uncovered in the east of the country and that they predate the pyramids in Egypt.
But the claim that there is evidence of pyramids is being disputed. The prestigious Academy of Sciences has sent its own expert to the dig.
It believes that this could be the Ukrainian version of Stonehenge.
This could be one of the most exciting archaeological discoveries in recent years.
It is claimed that pyramids are buried underground in eastern Ukraine. A team digging at a site near to the city of Luhansk has unearthed a huge religious complex.
It has uncovered remains which are believed to date back thousands of years.
The archaeologists say that clay plates, weighing each at least two tonnes, were arranged in circles and plastered over.
It is thought that it will take years for archaeologists to uncover the hidden truth.

Words of Wisdom from Indian Country

U ti yv hi - Coming Soon To Your PlanetThe heat wave that has engulfed our area has finally broken. Cool nights and warm days have brought back memories of autumn harvests and the promise of cold winter nights spent remembering the past and anticipating the future. But this happy vision lies in stark contrast to world events, real or imagined, that is broadcast in detail by the news media. Not only do we hear of the disasters, atrocities and wars taking place throughout the world, but we are subjected to a heavy dose of "what if" scenarios. All of this negative reporting does nothing to raise the positive energy we need to move into the next world. It is said that Earth is a school where all spirits come as humans to learn lessons which, when mastered, will allow them to progress up the spiral toward "perfection." This is the basis of Indigenous wisdom. It is also understood that everything that happens in this life will be balanced by the end of time. Cherokee refer to this balance as "u ti yv hi" - (you tee yuh hee). Buddhists refer to it as Karma - which in layman's terms means "what goes 'round comes 'round. In 8th grade science class we were taught that for every action there is an equal but opposite reaction. But the idea is the same in any language. What is happening today is either balancing something from the past or creating an action that will have to be balanced somewhere down the road. Our People have the promise from Creator that very soon we will have our land, spirituality and culture back. I do not believe that we will have to do anything for this to happen since the forces of "u ti yv hi" are already in play. Nothing can be done now to stop it.Yet I hear from the people whose ancestors came here, raped, robbed, stole and pillaged, that they are looking forward to being taken out of this world to live in glory while the rest of us suffer the consequences of their actions. Prisons are full of people who subscribe to this way of thinking. But soon our prophecies tell us, that this nonsense will end. It would behoove each of us to do what little we can to aid in the balancing of Mother Earth. It will happen with or without our help, but by helping we become less a part of the problem and more part of the solution. There are better days coming. It has been written.<><><><><><><><><><><><><><>

Uproar over theories of telepathy & the afterlife

Theories of telepathy and afterlife cause uproar at top science forumBy Mark Henderson, Science Editor
SCIENTISTS claiming to have evidence of life after death and the powers of telepathy triggered a furious row at Britain’s premier science festival yesterday. Organisers of the British Association for the Advancement of Science (the BA) were accused of lending credibility to maverick theories on the paranormal by allowing the highly controversial research to be aired unchallenged.
Leading members of the science establishment criticised the BA’s decision to showcase papers purporting to demonstrate telepathy and the survival of human consciousness after someone dies. They said that such ideas, which are widely rejected by experts, had no place in the festival without challenge from sceptics.

The disputed session featured research from Rupert Sheldrake, an independent biologist who is funded by Trinity College, Cambridge, that claims to have found evidence that some people know telepathically who is calling them before they answer the telephone.
Other presentations came from Peter Fenwick, a doctor who thinks deathbed visions suggest that consciousness survives when people die, and from Deborah Delanoy of the University of Hertfordshire, whose work suggests that people can affect the bodies of others by thinking about them.
Critics including Lord Winston and Sir Walter Bodmer, both former presidents of the BA, expressed particular alarm that the three speakers were allowed to hold a promotional press conference.

time travel research

Experiments aimed at unlocking secrets of time travel are being led by Aberdeen University.
Researchers are examining the fabric of space time and what science fiction authors refer to as the fourth dimension.
Dr Charles Wang will study the microscopic movement of atoms, which can be affected by the earth spinning.
He said: "This is a very interesting possibility which cannot entirely be ruled out by physics."
Television's Dr Who and the Back to the Future movies promised the concept of time travel.
Albert Einstein said instead of considering space to be a shapeless vacuum it should be looked at as an object.
The theory is for something to exist it must have length, breadth and thickness, the three dimensions.
It must also have something else. An object exists from the moment it is created to the moment it is destroyed. In between those moments is the duration of time - the so-called fourth dimension.
Space mission
HG Wells wrote the Time Machine about it - now Dr Wang hopes to make it real.
He is a reader in the College of Physical Sciences and a member of the Aberdeen centre for applied dynamics research.
Dr Wang said he is waiting for the European Space Agency (ESA) to launch a science satellite to aid his research.
He told BBC Scotland: "If you have curved space time, the time circles and you might just travel in time.
"If we can slow down the atom and isolate it and guide into the fluctuation then there's a possibility it's there.
"The increased sensitivity obtained by a space experiment certainly makes a space mission very worthwhile.
"If successful the results will have a profound impact on our understanding of the fundamental nature of space and time in the universe."
Dr Wang however has time on his hands, as the ESA satellite is not due for launch until 2015.

Disclosure of the 3 forbidden R's

Ufology has, for good reason, been called “the forbidden science.” In fact, well-known author Jacques Vallee wrote a book by that title about the science of Unidentified Flying Objects. For decades now, scientists who venture even into the periphery of UFO studies have become pariahs in the scientific community. Most won’t get near it with a ten-foot pole.
This project was to deal with the three forbidden “Rs” of ufology. Mack’s concept was to write a joint paper for publication, perhaps even a book, dealing with a variety of topics, including the many cases in which individuals report contact with non-human entities with distinctly reptilian features. Such reports have been known to researchers since at least the early 1990s, but few have been anxious to write about them or to speak on the subject publicly.
Religion and UFOs
Additionally, Dr. Mack wanted to discuss the problematic issue of the ancient history of a sentient serpent race that is found in ancient texts, such as the Vedic literature from India and the Sumerian texts from Mesopotamia, as well as the Dead Sea Scrolls and the Bible. I say problematic, because ufologists, in general, struggle to maintain the notion that the UFO mystery began only 50 or so years ago. By maintaining this arbitrary timeline, they are able to profess that the phenomenon is either a scientific study by aliens from nearby star systems, or the early stages of an alien invasion. Those are the only conclusions one can reasonably come to if UFOs are something relatively new. But what kind of study or invasion takes thousands of years? What if these so-called “aliens” have always been here, and ancient writings portray encounters with them? What if the gods of old are the aliens of today?
If this is so, the study of ufology cannot avoid delving into both ancient religions and contemporary ones. This is a terrible dilemma for those wishing to make the study of UFOs an acceptable mainstream science. Debunkers already love to claim that those interested in UFOs are cultists, or that ufology is itself a religion and, therefore, not a science. Now an eminent scientist and UFO researcher was about to state publicly that reptilian beings exist and that they may have been here for thousands of years! That would certainly have rocked the ufology boat and made waves in the scientific community.
Full Story:
http://fatemag.com/issues/2000s/2006-09article1a.html
I had the good fortune to get to know Dr. Mack in 1993 when he spoke at a conference in Arkansas, and then again when we were both speaking in Australia in 1996. We subsequently became good friends. We traveled together to do research in Mexico and communicated frequently by phone and email. He endorsed my book, The God Hypothesis: Extraterrestrial Life and its Implications for Science and Religion, with enthusiasm, even though it dealt with all three of the forbidden “Rs” that he could not pursue at the time. Since I had no scientific reputation to uphold, and could therefore care less what the scientific community thought of me, I found it easy to be blunt and forthright about my conclusions (and those of other researchers who quietly agreed with me) that UFOs are not a new phenomenon and that the Bible and other ancient texts are full of encounters with so-called “aliens.” Truthfully, I don’t know whether they are aliens, angels, demons, or gods. There may not be a good word in our vocabulary to describe these beings, who have had a strange, symbiotic relationship with life on earth for so long.
Privately, John Mack was very interested in the other-dimensional quality of many UFO encounters. He was convinced that many of the experiences reported actually occurred in other realities or dimensions. “If something happens in another reality, is it real?” he once asked me. We agreed that we were not in a good position to make a conclusion on the issue since we had not experienced anything ourselves. But we honored the beliefs of our research subjects in the reality of their experiences, and we knew there was ample physical evidence, such as scars, bruises, needle marks, and implants, that substantiated many of the stories were were told. We finally decided that it would be foolish for scientists to ignore what goes on in other realities. There is just too much for the human race to gain by pursuing the issue of the existence of other dimensions. By denying their existence, we will never discover how to explore them.
There is a long history of humans claiming contact with beings in other dimensions. Anthropologists who study cave art are now coming to the conclusion that many of the images, which in some cases are more than 10,000 years old, are representations of shamanic journeys into other dimensions and encounters with the beings who dwell there. Shamans commune with beings in other realities through various means including hallucinogenic plants, trance dancing and singing, fasting, drumming, and meditation. They return with knowledge that is pertinent to life on earth. Shamanism is associated with the use of plants for medicinal purposes as well as for foretelling future events and other forms of extrasensory perception.
Some of the most ancient texts of all, the clay tablets of the Mesopotamian cultures of Sumer and Babylonia, tell of the beings known as the Annunaki, who came from the heavens more than 200,000 years ago and created the human race. These documents, far older than the Old Testament, contain the story of human origins at the hands of extraterrestrials, the great flood that destroyed most of humanity, and the survivors who are the ancestors of today’s civilization.
All of these facts and many more make it difficult for today’s ufologists to limit the UFO phenomenon to modern times, and asserting that UFOs have nothing to do with religion. In fact, UFOs have everything to do with religion.
To be continued.......
Part II, appearing in the next issue, will deal with reincarnation and the role it plays in the UFO contact phenomenon.
Joe Lewels, Ph.D., is the author of The God Hypothesis: Extraterrestrial Life and Its Implications for Science and Religion. His new book, Rulers of the Earth (Galde Press) will be available in early 2007.
